Former Sokoto State Deputy Governor and immediate past Secretary of Police Trust Fund, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, has won the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship primary election in Sokoto state.

Aliyu polled 1,080 votes out of 1,182 total votes cast at the primary election contested by six aspirants.

The Election Committee Chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Kyari, said Sen. Ibrahim Gobir scored 36 votes, Ambassador Faruk Malami-Yabo, 27 votes, and Former Minister of Transport, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman, 16 votes and 23 invalid votes.

Mr Kyari said other aspirants were Abubakar Abdullahi, 1 vote and Sen. Umar Gada, 0 votes.

The Chairman declared Aliyu, having the highest votes, as the winner in line with the constitution of the APC.

During the exercise, dozens of All APC delegates expressed displeasure about the election modalities, which entailed writing candidates’ names by delegates on the blank ballot paper.

The situation had subjected the process into becoming open balloting in recognition that most delegates could not write by themselves.

However, another delegate who preferred to speak on the condition of anonymity appealed to the party leadership in the state to ensure a transparent and credible exercise.
