Makemation, an African AI-themed family film, has made a historic debut at Nigerian cinemas, grossing ₦32.9 million within its first four days of release. The film, which premiered over the Easter weekend, is now being hailed as the most successful African tech-centred film to date.

Directed by Michael ‘AMA Psalmist’ Akinrogunde and produced by Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji under Rise Interactive Studios, Makemation tells the compelling story of 17-year-old Zara Sodangi, a determined teenager from a poverty-stricken community on the outskirts of Lagos. Her life takes a transformative turn when she gains admission into the prestigious Makemation Institute, Nigeria’s leading tech academy.

The film’s storyline highlights how Zara uses artificial intelligence to tackle challenges in education, health, and food security, positioning her as a beacon of hope and innovation.

Speaking about the film’s impressive performance, producer Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji said,

“Makemation is not just a film; it is a movement. We wanted to show that young African girls can be the face of innovation and that technology has a role to play in solving Africa’s biggest problems. The reception has been overwhelming, and it shows that our stories matter.”

Director Akinrogunde also reflected on the impact of the film’s message:

“We crafted Makemation with the hope of inspiring the next generation of thinkers and creators. The box office success is a validation of that dream.”

Released alongside several Nollywood titles during the competitive Easter season, Makemation stood out for its unique fusion of storytelling, youth empowerment, and technology. Critics and cinema-goers have praised the film’s rich narrative and inspirational tone.

A cinema manager in Lagos commented:

“People were intrigued by the trailer, but it’s the story that kept them coming back. It’s rare to see African films focus on tech in a way that’s both entertaining and enlightening.”

As Makemation continues to draw audiences, it sets a new benchmark for African cinema and opens the door for more films that celebrate technological progress and youth-driven solutions.

Makemation not only marks a box office triumph but also underscores a growing appetite for purposeful storytelling in Nollywood stories that blend innovation, culture, and social change.
