Airbus has unveiled its A350-1000 aircraft powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the Singapore Airshow 2024, which runs from Feb 20 to Feb 22.

Airbus will feature the eco-friendly aircraft as part of its flying displays marking a significant step towards decarbonizing the aviation industry and reducing its environmental impact.

Supplied by Shell Aviation, the SAF utilized is a 35 per cent blend, incorporating a mixture of used cooking oil and tallow, alongside conventional jet fuel.

Ahead of its showcase, the wide-body aircraft underwent refuelling with approximately 12.8 tonnes of blended SAF at Changi Airport on February 18th, marking a significant milestone in sustainable aviation practices.

SAF offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels, boasting an average 80 per cent reduction in carbon emissions from production to consumption.

Airbus announced that its entire fleet is capable of operating with up to 50 per cent SAF, with plans to increase this ratio to 100 per cent by 2030.

Highlighting its dedication to decarbonization, Airbus flew the A350-1000 from its headquarters in Toulouse, France, to Singapore, utilizing a blend of SAF for the journey.

The company aims to procure SAF for the aircraft’s return flight to Toulouse post-air show, contingent upon availability.
