Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has approved the maintenance funds for 83 roads within Uyo metropolis, the state capital and the full rehabilitation of major roads.

This serves as part of efforts to improve road infrastructure and ease movement within the state capital.

The approval followed reports from ongoing ministerial briefings, shortly after the Governor received a presentation from the Ministry of Works.

He directed that all failed portions of the affected roads be fixed immediately, stressing that the work must be completed before the end of the dry season.

Governor Eno said that the contractor has already been mobilised to commence the maintenance works, with clear instructions to ensure timely delivery.

The Governor also received briefings from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health, during which he granted several approvals aimed at improving social welfare and service delivery.

Distribution of food items

For the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Governor Eno approved the distribution of food items to vulnerable citizens for the first quarter of the year, with the exercise scheduled to take place during the forthcoming Easter period.

In the education sector, the Governor approved the payment of first and second term subventions for public primary, secondary and technical colleges across the state.

He also approved the payment of WASSCE, NABTEB and science practical fees for SS3 and ST3 students of Akwa Ibom State origin in public schools.

Additional approvals in the education sector include the procurement of school uniforms, socks, bags and shoes for pupils in model primary schools.

Health insurance

During the briefing by the Ministry of Health, Governor Eno approved all health-related counterpart funding for 2025, covering programmes such as health insurance, primary healthcare, immunisation, family planning and nutrition.

The Governor, who had declared a state of emergency in the health sector last year, also approved the release of funds for the 2024 Medical Residency Training Programme, revitalisation of the State Central Medical Stores, and the issuance of appointment letters to newly engaged contract staff.

He commended the Ministry of Health for the reforms and milestones recorded in 2025, while urging the ministry to sustain the momentum and improve service delivery in 2026.
