The Al-Habibiyya Islamic Society has disbursed ₦15m in Zakat to 90 beneficiaries in Paduma Community, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), providing much-needed relief to the less privileged.

The initiative aims to alleviate poverty and strengthen economic stability within the Muslim community.

The Word Zakat is an Arabic word considered a way to purify one’s wealth, soul, and community.

In his remark, the Chief Imam of Al-habibiyya Mosque, Imam Fuad Adeyemi revealed that the 4th National Zakat Day and 14th Public Zakat Disbursement by Al-habibiyya with the theme: “Exploring Waqf (Endowment) for Sustainable Measure Against Poverty” is aim at ameliorating poverty among the Muslims.

Imam Adeyemi charged the beneficiaries to invest the money and items given to them so that they could also give to others in the coming year.

There is no poverty in Islam; it is just that most of the people are not giving out their Zakat in the right way as Allah orden us to give, that is the reason we organised this lecture to educate our Muslim brothers on how to give out their Zakat and the importance of endowment in Islam.

“We design the Disbursement in a transparent way that all the beneficiaries meet the requirements as stated in the Holy Qur’an and no Family member of the Zakat committee benefits from this Disbursement.”

We in Al-habibiyya are also exploring other strategies to see how we can give our best and transform the lives of less privileged Nigerians, not necessarily Muslims; we also assist our Christian brothers here.”

In his remark, the Senior Lecturer Department of Islamic Law Kwara State University Southwest Nigeria, Abdullahi Salisu, said that Zakat, as one of the five pillars of Islam, is imposed on Muslims as a tool to alleviate poverty and support the weak ones in society.

Salisu revealed that Islam does not encourage laziness and begging, however, it’s unfortunate how some Muslims distribute their Zakat in the wrong way without knowing the rules.

He further urged Muslims to emulate the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad S. A W. in assisting one another regardless of tribe and social difference.

Government should also intensify effort by exploring ways to enhance the well-being of Nigerians looking at how most people are living in Poverty”

In his remark, Minister of State for Regional Development Maigari Uba Ahmadu commended the unwavering commitment of Al-habibiyya in touching the lives of many Nigerians through their various programmes.

The Minister also expressed the commitment of the present administration to ameliorating the economic hardship bedeviling the masses and called on Nigerians to assist one another and live in peace and harmony.

The National Zakat Day, introduced by Al-habibiyya Islamic Society, aims to create awareness about the significance of Zakat and Waqf (endowment) in Islam, encourage participation, and explain endowment as the tool for poverty eradication by ensuring the rightful distribution to less privileged in society.
