Al-Habibiyya Pays Tribute to Former Chief Justice, Uwais

The Al-Habibiyya Islamic Society, has held a special prayer session in honour of former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Late Muhammed Uwais, in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The Islamic Society indicated that the special prayers were offered to seek Allah’s forgiveness for Justice Uwais, who passed away on June 6, 2025, at his residence in Abuja.

In his address, Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi described the death of Muhammad Uwais as a great loss to the country, especially in the judiciary system.

The Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyya Mosque, Imam Fuad Adeyemi, remembered the deceased as an individual whose legacy in the judiciary will never be forgotten, along with his significant contributions to humanitarian service.

Imam Adeyemi noted that Al-Habibiyya Islamic Society was one of the primary beneficiaries of Justice Uwais’s humanitarian efforts and prayed for Allah to forgive his shortcomings.

“Al-Habibiyya organized this special prayer for our late father in recognition of his service to the country and his devotion to his religion, which has positively impacted this center,” he stated.

Senator Hadi Sirika, the former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, stated that the late Uwais ‘s contributions to Nigeria’s judiciary cannot be overstated, given his legacy in the country’s judicial system.

In his remarks, Mr. Haruna Uwais, the eldest son of the late Uwais expressed gratitude to the Al-Habibiyya Society for organizing the special prayer and sought Allah’s forgiveness for his late father.

He also prayed for the safe return of everyone who attended the prayer to their respective destinations.

Justice Muhammad Uwais was the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He served from 1995 until his retirement in 2006.

Following his retirement, he chaired the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee inaugurated by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
