Albania’s TikTok Ban Triggers Freedom of Speech Debate

Albania, a country located in Southeastern Europe, recently imposed a one-year ban on TikTok, sparking a national debate over freedom of speech and the role of social media in society.

The decision, announced on 1 January 2025, follows growing concerns about youth violence linked to the platform and aligns with a broader global trend of scrutinising social media’s impact.

What Led to the Ban?

The immediate catalyst for the ban was the tragic stabbing of a 14-year-old boy in December 2024, reportedly following an online dispute on TikTok that escalated into real-world violence. This incident, coupled with increasing reports of harmful trends and youth misconduct on the platform, prompted the government to take decisive action.

Prime Minister Edi Rama defended the decision as a protective measure, stating, “We cannot allow our young generation to be endangered by harmful online trends.” The government framed the ban as essential for safeguarding children and addressing TikTok’s perceived negative influence on Albanian society.
