Nigeria’s Super Falcons Hold Portugal in Six-Goal Thriller

The Super Falcons of Nigeria came from behind in the dying moments of an entertaining encounter to hold Portugal to a 3-3 draw in the second match of the 2021 US Summer Series Tour in the United States.

Nigeria were coming off a 1-0 loss to Jamaica on the first match day of the Summer Series on June 10 , while Portugal lost 1-0  to the USA. These scores that could not predict the goal fest that was to come.

Portugal scored twice inside the first 34 minutes, and Nigeria pulled a goal back just before halftime. Portugal then extended its lead making it 3-1 early in the second half.

The Falcons came back fighting and scored two goals, one of which game just before the full time whistle. The goal came after Portugal forward Melissa Gomes made an ill-advised back pass in her own defence and it was picked off by forward Gift Monday.

She then played a short pass to Payne who dribbled into the left side of box and cut a short pass back to Ajibade who slid to knock the ball into the right corner.

GOAL!!!! The goal sparked a wild celebrations from the Nigerians and the final whistle blew seconds later. A great comeback by the Super Falcons, showing strength, passion and resilience against a tough Portugal side.

After playing two matches each in the Summer Series, Portugal and Jamaica now head home while the USA and Nigeria will finish the Summer Series on June 16 in Austin, Texas.

It would be the first-ever match at the brand new Q2 Stadium.
