The Anambra State Government has approved infrastructure contracts valued at approximately ₦16.7 billion (about USD 18 million), covering major road, electricity, erosion control and urban renewal projects, as part of efforts to boost economic growth, social cohesion and quality of life across the state.

The approvals were granted at the first Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) meeting of 2026, held at the Light House in Awka, the state capital. The decisions were disclosed in a press statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor.

In addition to the contract awards, the council directed the Ministry of Environment and the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) to commence enforcement of standard road setbacks along newly constructed dual carriageways across the state.

The policy mandates setbacks of 1.5 metres in built-up areas and three metres in other zones, measured from drainage lines, in line with international best practices for pedestrian safety and non-motorised transport.

Mefor said the council also reviewed the state’s security situation and reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining what it described as Anambra’s restoration as Nigeria’s most secure state.

Measures include strengthened collaboration among security agencies and logistical support, such as the recent donation of 30 patrol vehicles to the Anambra State Police Command.

Urban regeneration featured prominently in the meeting’s resolutions. The council approved the establishment of a committee to design a comprehensive facelift for Nnewi, one of the state’s major commercial hubs, while also finalising plans to further upgrade Nnobi.

According to the government, the objective is to revitalise and realign the two strategic urban centres in line with the Soludo administration’s urban renewal agenda.

The council further resolved that the state’s Christmas and New Year celebrations, branded ‘Onwa Dezemba’, will become a permanent annual programme. Mefor said the initiative is being developed into a flagship cultural and tourism event that will attract both residents and international visitors every yuletide season.

On infrastructure spending, the council approved the release of ₦15.96 billion for the construction and dualisation of the 33-kilometre Nsugbe–Aguleri Road, including a one-span bridge.

The project, awarded to Ferotex Construction Company Ltd, is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the Onitsha–Nkwelle corridor and advance the state’s policy of dualising all major trunk roads.

Other approved projects include ₦56.39 million for the supply and installation of a 500 kVA, 33/0.415 kV transformer at Irueyim Community in Nteje, Oyi Local Government Area; ₦159.6 million for solar street lighting along Oye Market Road in Isuofia; and ₦497 million for the reclamation, rechannelisation and remediation of a gully erosion site at Umugama-Ire Village in Abba, Njikoka Local Government Area.

The latest approvals build on earlier infrastructure investments. In November 2025, the state government announced the award of contracts worth ₦4.7 billion for similar road, power and public works projects.

That meeting also endorsed plans for Onwa Dezemba, described by officials as an ambitious festive programme centred on the Solution Fun City and the reconstructed Ekwueme Square in Awka.

Together, the government says, the projects emphasizes Anambra’s push for modern infrastructure, improved urban management and a stronger cultural and economic profile within Nigeria and beyond.
