During the recent AOP 2025 SWAP process meeting held in Awka, the State capital, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, highlighted that the SWAP initiative was launched months ago in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), state health ministries, and various partners.

“The objective of this initiative is to transform Nigeria’s healthcare system through a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing chronic issues within the health sector,” Dr. Obidike stated.

He noted that the two-day Management Committee meeting brought together all health implementing partners in the state, emphasizing the significance of a sector-wide approach in strengthening health systems. This collaborative strategy aims to integrate efforts across government, private sectors, and civil society.

Participants underscored the necessity of cohesive policies that see health issues as interconnected rather than isolated. This approach involves collaboration with sectors such as education, finance, and agriculture to address social determinants of health.

“The World Health Organization (WHO) recently announced a new initiative to pool resources, urging countries to invest collectively in healthcare systems. This effort aims to ensure equitable access to healthcare services, particularly in underserved regions.”

Successful examples from countries like Rwanda and Thailand were shared, demonstrating how integrating health initiatives with other sectors has led to improved health metrics and increased community resilience.

Leaders emphasized the importance of local community involvement in shaping health strategies. Utilizing community-based approaches ensures that health interventions are culturally relevant and effective.

The meeting also spotlighted the role of technology in advancing a sector-wide approach, with innovations in data sharing and telemedicine being recognized as vital tools for enhancing healthcare service delivery.

As countries face ongoing health challenges, including pandemics and non-communicable diseases, Dr. Obidike stated that the commitment to a sector-wide approach marks a significant step towards achieving holistic health solutions.

The summit concluded with a call to action for governments, NGOs, and the private sector to prioritize collaboration, with the potential to reshape the global health landscape and ensure that no one is left behind.

Dr. Obidike added that under Governor Charles Soludo’s administration, the Anambra health sector has received unprecedented support, and the achievements of his government over the past few years are unparalleled since the creation of the state.

He expressed gratitude to UNAIDS, WHO, UNICEF, and other partners for their contributions to the healthcare sector in Anambra.
