The Anambra State Physical Planning Board has launched an ambitious effort to enhance environmental safety and security by initiating a comprehensive demolition of unauthorized structures and shanties in Onitsha, the bustling commercial hub of the state.
This operation, led by Barrister Chike Maduekwe, Chairman of the Board, is a response to serious concerns over unauthorized constructions that threaten community safety.
The demolition effort was prompted by reports from concerned residents regarding several hazardous buildings, including one under construction at Enekwasumpu, Omagba Phase 2, which was obstructing drainage channels and worsening flooding risks. During a visit to the site, Maduekwe confirmed that the structure had been erected without the necessary building permits and had previously been issued warnings from the Board.
This exercise is total and continuous, we cannot jeopardize the lives of the people of Anambra,” Maduekwe stated, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards construction violations. He stressed that any buildings erected without proper approvals would face immediate demolition, regardless of the offender’s status.
The Chairman revealed alarming allegations linked to one of the buildings, suggesting it was being used for criminal activities, including reports of sexual assault.
Following these claims, the Board has vowed to monitor the area closely and to invite the developer for questioning regarding these incidents.
Residents have expressed relief and gratitude over the demolitions, citing long-standing intimidation from the developer of the illegal building.
He would harass anyone who dared to challenge him,” said one resident(name withheld ), reflecting a widespread sentiment of helplessness that the demolitions have now alleviated.
In accordance with a directive from Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the Physical Planning Board has firmly established that any deviation from the law will not be tolerated.
Operation Show Your Building Permit” has begun enforcing compliance among developers, as the moratorium on unapproved constructions has officially ended.
Maduekwe concluded with a stern warning to builders, including government officials, stating that failure to obtain necessary approvals before construction will result in demolition and potential legal consequences.
This restoration of order in the urban landscape is seen not only as a regulatory measure but as a crucial step in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of residents across Anambra State.
