The Anambra State Government has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of life in a stampede that occurred during a rice distribution event in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, on Saturday.
In a statement issued by Christian Aburime, the Press Secretary to Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo, the state leader extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, particularly the women, elderly, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children who were affected by this unfortunate incident.
The government clarified that the event was organized by the Obi Jackson Foundation, led by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, with the admirable goal of providing relief materials to underprivileged members of the community during the festive season.
However, the ensuing tragedy underscores the critical need for a more organized and secured approach to such charitable distributions.
In response to this incident, the Anambra State Government has launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede.
Authorities will collaborate with relevant agencies to identify the root causes and address any negligence or shortcomings in safety protocols.
The State Government has also urged individuals and organizations involved in charitable activities to prioritize the safety and welfare of recipients. It has called for future relief distributions to be executed in a more structured and decentralized manner, incorporating adequate crowd control measures.
These recommended measures include:- Establishing multiple distribution points within the community to alleviate congestion.
– Prioritizing vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, pregnant women, children, and individuals with disabilities.
– Employing trained personnel to manage crowds, maintain orderly queues, and offer assistance to those in need.
– Implementing public awareness campaigns to educate the community on safety protocols during such events.
