The Anambra State Government, through its Ministry of Health,  to improve community health,  has announced its decision to withhold salaries from two health workers at the Abacha Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Idemili North Local Government Area, for failing to report to their duty post.

The Anambra State Government, through its Ministry of Health, has taken a step towards improving community health by announcing their decision to withhold salaries from two health workers at the Abacha Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Idemili North Local Government Area.

According to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, the decision was made due to the health workers’ failure to report to their duty post.

Dr. Obidike disclosed this information during an unannounced inspection at the Abacha PHC in Idemili North Local Government Area. He noted that two out of the four workers were absent, prompting immediate disciplinary action.

Expressing his discontent with the lax attitude of the personnel, Dr. Obidike emphasized the need for accountability among health workers. He warned that those unwilling to fulfill their responsibilities should consider resigning, to make way for committed individuals dedicated to the welfare of the community.

“This situation is unacceptable.

“Denying community members access to healthcare undermines the efforts of our Governor in enhancing the healthcare sector. My visit today was intended to gain firsthand insights into the operations of our health staff, and I was taken aback to find the facility locked.”

Dr. Obidike highlighted the concerning immunization coverage of only 2% in the community, attributing this failure partly to the absent health workers.

“The Ministry of Health has urged other health workers to take their duties seriously and fulfill their obligations to the people they serve. It is essential that all healthcare professionals adhere to strict standards of professionalism and dedication to ensure the well-being of the community.

“The government’s decision to withhold salaries from the non-compliant health workers shows their commitment to upholding high standards of healthcare delivery in Anambra State. It is a proactive measure aimed at promoting accountability and ensuring that all health workers fulfill their duty to the public.”

In a meeting with Igwe Godwin N. Odiegwu, the Traditional Ruler of Abacha Community, the Commissioner urged local leaders to advocate for the importance of vaccinations among residents. “Immunization is crucial for building resistance to infectious diseases through vaccines,” he reiterated.

Igwe Odiegwu committed to fostering improvements in immunization rates within the community, expressing gratitude to the Commissioner for his commitment to ensuring health workers perform their duties effectively.

Commenting on the situation, State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, lamented the decline in public service ethics, emphasizing the need for a renewed focus on job performance among public servants.

“The government’s action affirms the importance of accountability and commitment in the healthcare sector. By holding these individuals accountable for their absence, the government is sending a clear message that negligence in the healthcare profession will not be tolerated.

“This move is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance the quality of healthcare services in Anambra State. It serves as a reminder to all health workers of the importance of fulfilling their responsibilities and prioritizing the well-being of the community.”
