Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State emphasised the need for collective action in a bid to salvage the nation during the celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day Service at the Cathedral Church of St. Faith in Awka, the state capital, on Sunday.

The Independence Day Service, known as the Interdenominational Church Service, is a traditional gathering that unites Nigerians of diverse faiths to offer prayers for the nation.

Governor Soludo expressed gratitude to the event organisers and stressed the importance of continuous prayers for the nation and its leaders.

“Today’s service serves as a reminder that we are all Nigerian citizens first and foremost, and we all play a crucial role in the development of a strong and prosperous nation. Let us continue to pray for our leaders and the country as a whole,” he stated.

Addressing the congregation, the governor referenced the country’s glorious past and encouraged collective responsibility for a better future, quoting the late Sunny Okosun’s song urging, “Let’s save Nigeria, so Nigeria won’t die.”

Governor Soludo urged citizens to move beyond complaints and actively engage in initiatives to address challenges, emphasising the importance of utilising the power of the pulpit to mobilise action.

Reflecting on his administration’s achievements, the Governor highlighted recent policies such as free education for senior secondary students in public schools and the implementation of a minimum wage increase starting in October.

The Archbishop Ecclesiastical Province and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, underscored the significance of Nigeria’s Independence and advocated for unity and love amongst Nigerians, urging them to reject hate, nepotism, and tribalism.

The Independence Day Service concluded with the National Pledge, leaving attendees with a renewed sense of hope for a prosperous future for Nigeria, with Governor Soludo expressing enthusiasm for continued participation in national events.

In attendance were the deputy governor, Service Commanders in Anambra State, the Judiciary, and representatives of the clergy, among others, who came together for hymns, prayers, and inspiring messages from religious leaders and the choir.
