The bill was passed for the second reading on Tuesday, where lawmakers expressed optimism that the development would enhance democratic governance at the grassroots level by enabling citizens to elect leaders who are directly accountable to them.

The move makes way for the much-anticipated local government elections and the setting up of a robust legal framework for their conduct.

The bill will come into force on June 5, 2024, immediately it is assented to by Governor Soludo.
