Anambra State Housing Commissioner, Mr. Pauly Onyeka, has urged members of the Anambra State Chapter of the Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIASSC) to prioritize unity and environmental transformation to foster better development in the state.

Speaking at the Nigeria Institute of Architects’ annual conference held at the Oba Daniel Nwandu Architectural Research Center, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Onyeka emphasized the critical importance of professionalism and good conduct in the building profession to avoid industry challenges.
Earlier in the event, NIASSC State Chairman, Arc. Ikenna Onuorah, welcomed attendees, noting that this year’s theme, “Towards A Livable and Sustainable Urban City: Role of Professionalism in Planning and Construction,” aligns with Professor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to addressing urban environmental challenges while emphasizing professionalism.

He advised architects to be meticulous in their work, stating, “From the outset, ensure your designs are thoroughly refined and well-packaged before implementation. This means carefully considering every aspect of the project and getting everything just right before taking it to the construction site.”
Onyeka encouraged architects to focus on environmental architecture, in addition to building design, highlighting the need to support Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s transformation agenda. He emphasized plans for urban regeneration aimed at creating a livable and prosperous smart mega city.
Architects often overlook environmental considerations in their designs, focusing mainly on infrastructure. I urge you to create designs that enhance the state’s aesthetic appeal and present these ideas to the government for adoption. By doing so, architects can make a significant contribution to the state’s development,” he stressed.
He also spoke on the need for discipline within the architectural community, urging leaders to promote unity and prevent disunity among members. Onyeka cautioned that arrogance could hinder progress and make it difficult to accept constructive advice, which is essential for growth.
Expressing his gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him, he noted that it reflects the ministry’s positive impact on the state and serves as a testament to Professor Chukwuma Soludo’s outstanding achievements. He reaffirmed his love for the architectural profession and pledged continued support for the association’s initiatives whenever necessary.
According to reports from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Onuorah pointed out that cities must provide a high quality of life for residents and possess an effective transportation system, green spaces, urban parks, sustainable housing, and accessible essential services, such as hospitals, among others.

The conference attracted several dignitaries, including the Acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Carol Umobi, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Prof. Agbonome P., the State Chairman of the Nigeria Institute of Structural Engineering, Prof. Akolisa Ezeagu, and the Chairman of the Institute of Surveyors, Anambra Chapter, Surv. Gabriel Okeke, among others.
