Anambra Ministry Of Environment Condemns Unauthorized Tree Cutting
By Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka
In accordance with the Anambra State Environmental Management Protection and Administration Law 2024, particularly Sections 4, 64(d), and 84(a) which prohibit illegal tree cutting within the state, the Anambra State Ministry of Environment has expressed deep concern over the recent unauthorized removal of trees along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, specifically between Aroma Junction and Agu Awka, by personnel from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
This action was taken without prior notification to the Ministry.
A press statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Tochukwu Obodogha, on behalf of Commissioner Engineer Felix Odimegwu, highlighted the purpose of these trees, which were planted to enhance the environment through beautification, act as carbon sinks to mitigate climate change, provide shade and regulate temperatures, and reduce air pollution.
The Ministry warned that if such indiscriminate tree cutting continues, the state could face severe environmental repercussions, including soil and gully erosion.
While acknowledging the rights of EEDC regarding their infrastructure, the Ministry advocates for a more sustainable management of these trees.
They stressed the importance of keeping the state government informed to promote an environmentally conscious approach that ensures development does not come at the expense of ecological integrity.
