The Anambra State Police Command has successfully rescued three individuals who were abducted by gunmen along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area.
The victims, whose identities are yet to be confirmed, were rescued at about 7:20 am on Saturday.
Reports indicate that the kidnapped victims were initially abducted along the Nsugbe-Nneyi, Umuleri in Anambra State on Friday evening.
A distressing video of the incident surfaced on social media, showing the kidnappers shooting one of the victims in the foot as a means to show their seriousness and compel their relatives to pay ransom.
The Anambra State police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that a joint security team conducted coordinated operations that led to the rescue of the three kidnap victims along the Onitsha/Owerri Express Road in Ozubulu.
The victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment of various degrees of injuries inflicted by the criminals.
In a separate incident, the Anambra State Police Command also arrested two armed robbery suspects who were terrorising parts of Awka, the state capital.
The suspects, Chibuike Ozoekwem, a 22-year-old male, and Favour Patrick, a 19-year-old female, were apprehended at an uncompleted building on Onwurah Street, Awka, by police operatives from the Special Anti-Cult Unit in Enugwu Ukwu.
The arrests of the armed robbery suspects followed security measures implemented by the state Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, to address complaints of theft from innocent road users in Awka.
During the arrests, the operatives recovered a pump-action gun, sixteen expended cartridges, a battle axe, and two suspected stolen phones from the suspects.
One victim was able to identify her stolen phone, stating that she was robbed at gunpoint by four armed men on March 13, 2025, along Club Road in Awka, the state capital.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, confirmed the arrests and stated that the police are expanding the investigation to target additional gang members involved in the armed robberies.
He assured that all suspects will be charged in court once the investigation is complete.
