Anambra school sports festival enters zonal qualifications stage
Competitions at the ongoing school sports festival in Anambra State Southeast Nigeria will shift to centres in the three Senatorial Districts of the state from June 9 and June 10.
The Chairman of Anambra Sports Commission, Patrick-Estate Onyedum, disclosed this in an interview with Journalists in Awka on Thursday.
The festival, grouped into Under-13 and Under-17 categories is organised under the Anambra Sports Solution Initiative for schools across the 179 communities in the 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
Onyedum said the festival which commenced on May 17 had successfully passed the community Local Government Area elimination stages with high enthusiasm and brilliant performances by students.
He said a total of 610 public and private primary and secondary schools enrolled for the games with no fewer than 17,000 students competing in the 11 selected events.
According to him, “I want to gladly inform you that our school sports festival has been a huge success so far.
“We started with the inter community schools competitions and moved on to the Local Government Area eliminations, so as I speak, we are set for the Senatorial District competitions from where we will have the finalists from the 21 LGAs,” he said.
Onyedum thanked Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for approving the reintroduction of school sports in the state after over a decade and the tremendous support he had given the sports sector.
He thanked the Main Organising Committee and LGA sports committees for putting up a satisfactory and impressive organisation.
He said the finals where schools would represent their LGAs would hold at the Awka township stadium between June 21 and June 24.
