The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr. Somtochukwu Udeze, has called on legislative institutions across the country to enact legislation that promotes the proper training and education of the girl child.
This call comes as the global community celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child.
In his message marking the day, Udeze urged relevant authorities and agencies to abolish policies and programs that threaten the future of the girl child, such as forced or early child marriage.
He stressed the importance of including young females in decision-making processes, especially in education, noting that an educated woman has the power to educate the entire family.
Udeze also encouraged young girls to stand up against intimidation from their male counterparts, both in school and at home.
He appealed to parents and influential citizens to prioritise the empowerment of the girl child as a collective responsibility.
However, gender equality is a crucial issue that requires the support and commitment of all members of society.
Udeze’s call for legislative action and societal change is a step in the right direction towards achieving gender equality and empowering young girls to reach their full potential.
