The Anambra State Government, through the State Ministry of Health, has made significant strides in the fight against HIV/AIDS by extending comprehensive services to 175 healthcare facilities across the state.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, reported that in 2024 alone, over 257,953 individuals were tested for HIV, with 3,138 testing positive and an impressive 99% successfully linked to treatment.
The World AIDS Day 2024 theme: “Take the Rights Path, Sustain HIV Response, Stop HIV Among Children,” was commemorated with reflections on achievements and challenges ahead in achieving an AIDS-free Anambra State by 2030.
According to the Commissioner, “The state’s commitment to inclusive, rights-based approaches and partnerships with various organizations have resulted in positive outcomes, including placing 49,067 individuals on Anti-Retroviral treatment and distributing condoms and lubricants to support prevention strategies.”
Dr. Obidike highlighted the success of the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) program and efforts to combat stigma, discrimination, and other barriers to care.
“The state government’s proactive initiatives, including domesticating the HIV anti-discrimination Act, demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting the rights of People Living with HIV. Despite challenges, including stigma and gender-based violence, the state remains focused on achieving health equity and an AIDS-free future for all residents.
“The collaborative efforts of government officials and organizations within the HIV response sector were acknowledged, with a call to re-commit to ensuring access to care, support, and dignity for all individuals in Anambra State.”
