Anambra State Governor Encourages Farming at 2024 New Yam Festival

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, has emphasized the importance of farming as a solution to food insecurity and economic challenges during the 2024 Anambra State

New Yam Festival (Iwa Ji) held at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, the state capital.

The Governor urged households to embrace the “Farm to Feed” initiative to reduce market dependence and alleviate the food crisis.

He announced the launch of “Operation Show Me Your Farm” and encouraged public officials to lead by example.

With every household embracing farming, the food crisis can be alleviated,” he said.

He rewarded top yam producers with cash prizes, the second consecutive winner of Di Ji Anambra, who is from Anaocha LGA, was gifted three million naira (N3,000,000), complemented by a tricycle gift from Ikenga Umuawulu, while the three runners-up received one million naira (N1,000,000) each.

The Governor emphasized the importance of engaging in farming to boost agricultural production and reduce market prices. He called on Ndị Igbo to uphold their cultural values and preserve their heritage, emphasizing the significance of farming in Igbo society.

The Commissioner for Tourism, Culture and Entertainment, Mr. Don Onyenji stated that the event is an important way of showcasing the culture and traditions for the benefit of the younger generation

The festival, attended by dignitaries and local farmers, showcased cultural displays, yam-cutting ceremonies, and prize presentations.

The event highlighted the cultural significance of farming in Ndị Igbo society and promoted the importance of agriculture in addressing food security challenges.
