Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo made a heartfelt return to his alma mater, Uga Boys Secondary School, located in Aguata Local Government Area of the state, unveiling plans to sponsor examination fees for all Junior Secondary Schools (JSS3) and Senior Secondary School (SS3) students over the next five years.

Describing the visit as an emotional “homecoming,” Soludo, who was the school’s pioneer senior prefect nearly five decades ago, expressed pride in his educational foundation, stating, “I stand before you not just as your Governor, but as a proud graduate of this school.” He emphasised that the education he received shaped his commitment to public service and advocacy for educational advancement.

During his visit, the Governor outlined an ambitious master plan to transform the school into a modern smart institution. Proposed upgrades include restoring boarding facilities, constructing contemporary quarters for teachers and the principal, and improving the school’s road networks, water supply, and power infrastructure. He underscored the critical role of quality teaching in shaping future leaders, stating, “The quality of teachers determines the quality of learning, which directly impacts the progress of society.”

A highlight of the event was Soludo’s emotional connection with students and faculty, during which he listened attentively to their aspirations and concerns. His pledge to cover WAEC fees received enthusiastic applause from the crowd. “I believe this scholarship will empower the next generation to fulfill their dreams and contribute positively to the state,” he remarked.

Additionally, the Governor called on the Uga community to practice collective stewardship over government assets, cautioning against theft and vandalism under the Public-Private-Community Partnership (PPCP) initiative.

The School Principal Igwedinma Benjamin and Senior Prefect Chinago Chidumebi expressed gratitude for the Governor’s efforts to revitalise the education sector and requested further support to curb vandalism in the school. In recognition of his contribution, the institution awarded Soludo a portrait honoring his legacy as its first Senior Prefect.

Among attendees were notable figures including Commissioner for Education Professor Ngozi Chuma Udeh, Chairman of the Post Primary School Service Commission Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu, and the local traditional ruler, enhancing the significance of this uniting event.

As Soludo departed, he expressed hope for the future, reiterating his belief that investments in education are essential for building a prosperous society.

Meanwhile, speaking further on his verified social media handle, Governor Soludo said, “Today, I had the profound honour of returning to my alma mater, Uga Boys Secondary School. Standing before our cherished badge, I was flooded with memories of the experiences that shaped my journey.

“As the first Pioneer Senior Prefect, I have a unique connection with this remarkable institution. I am excited to announce that Uga Boys Secondary School is on the verge of a significant transformation, as substantial investments are being made in schools across our state.

“In addition, I have pledged to cover the fees for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for students at Uga Boys for the next five years.

“As a proud alumnus, I remain deeply committed to giving back to my alma mater. I believe in the transformative power of education and want to ensure that future generations of students have access to the opportunities they deserve.”
