The Anambra State Government has announced an ambitious low-cost housing initiative aimed at addressing accommodation challenges faced by civil servants and low-income households.
The scheme, which envisions the construction of 10,000 affordable homes in Isiagu, Awka South Local Government Area, will be delivered through a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) with selected real estate developers.
According to a statement issued on Saturday, Commissioner for Housing Paully Onyeka said Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo approved the project long ago, but its rollout was delayed by last-minute bureaucratic and contractual issues.
Governor Soludo’s administration has resolved the bureaucratic and contractual issues that delayed the project, clearing the way for construction to begin this dry season.
Speaking while defending his ministry’s 2026 budget before the State Assembly’s Committee on Appropriation, Onyeka described the project as “a well-structured plan designed to expand access to decent and affordable accommodation for workers and low-income earners across the state.” He said:
“The 10,000 low-cost housing units will soon become a reality. The initiative will significantly reduce the housing deficit among civil servants and low-income residents.
Now that the dry season has begun and all PPP-related issues have been sorted out, the state government is ready to move full steam into construction.”
Onyeka emphasised that Governor Soludo’s broader infrastructure agenda, particularly large-scale road construction, is opening up new residential corridors across the state, making housing development more viable than before.
Although primarily a service ministry, the Housing Ministry, he said, plays a key technical role in several government infrastructure projects.
These include the recent upgrade of Ekwueme Square, improvements at the Commissioners’ Quarters, and construction of a new trauma centre at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital in Awka.
“Our responsibilities extend beyond projects directly under the Ministry,” he noted. “We provide technical support even when projects are domiciled in other agencies, ensuring prudent use of public funds in line with the administration’s development priorities.”
The latest initiative follows the state’s announcement in November 2024 of a joint plan with the Federal Government to develop 500 affordable housing units for low-income earners.
According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, both projects align with Governor Soludo’s vision of expanding access to safe, affordable housing and improving the welfare of civil servants.
