President Muhammadu Buhari has received the names of five aspirants for his consideration as the consensus presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of today’s national convention.

The names were submitted to him by Northern Governors elected under the platform of the APC.

Those that made the five-man shortlist include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi; Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi; former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, and former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi.

The Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, confirmed the shortlist on Tuesday.

He said those whose names were submitted had been graded by the party’s screening committee based on specified criteria.

The Governor however affirmed that the shortlist does not stop other candidates from presenting themselves for the primary election.

The APC Northern Governors had approached the Nigerian leader on Monday, to canvass for his support for a southern presidential candidate for the party.

Their second meeting with the President on Monday night came against the background of the announcement by the National Chairman of the APC, Senator Adamu Abdullahi, that he (President Buhari) had endorsed an aspirant, Ahmed Lawan as the consensus candidate.

The Presidency later denied Adamu’s claim, saying that President Buhari wanted the delegates to decide the presidential candidate of the APC.
