Supporters of Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura for national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the Alliance of Northern Progressive Youths, have said the ruling party will do better under Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura if he eventually emerged.
Briefing journalists on Friday in Abuja, the Director, Gender, and Governance of the group, Amina Wakawa, noted that Al-Makura’s contributions to the party since its inception showed his commitment to the success of APC and the well-being of its members at all levels.
In particular, the supporters condemned the consensus arrangement idea describing it as an imposition that would not go down well with the party.
According to them, democracy will be turned upside down if there is an imposition of any person who is not the people’s will.
She, however, explained that the victory of Al-Makura in Nasarawa State in 2011 was the factor that made President Muhammadu Buhari be a force to be reckoned with during the merger of the defunct Action Congress CPC, ANPP, and some part of APGA that birthed APC.
According to her, they considered President Muhammadu Buhari the most deserving candidate of APC in 2015 because he could pull out 12 million votes during the 2011 Presidential Elections on the platform of the defunct CPC with Al-Makura as the only CPC Governor behind.
The supporters described Senator Al-Makura as a true democrat, great achiever, and most suitable to occupy the office of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) than any other person aspiring to the position because of his political career and experiences.
She added that “Al-Makura represents a symbol of hope and emancipation in the Nigerian politics, whose determination to the cause of democracy, humanity, good governance and love for the average person anchored on fairness, equity and justice preceded his emergence as the elected Executive Governor of Nasarawa State in 2011.”
In his contribution, the president of Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership, Comrade Abdul Garba, advised APC leaders to support the youth’s choice.
“We will resist any attempt to impose APC national chairman on us; we will take over if leaders of the party cannot heed to our demand,” he said.
