An All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for the 2025 Anambra gubernatorial election, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has voiced concerns regarding the escalating insecurity in Anambra state.
Chukwuma’s comments came on Wednesday as he extended condolences to the family of Dr. Osita Chinedu, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, who was tragically shot and killed in Awka, the state capital, on Monday.
In a statement issued by his Campaign Council spokesperson, Mr. James Eze, Chukwuma expressed profound sorrow on the untimely death of the promising scholar, noting that he embodied the aspirations of his family and the nation at large.
“The loss of any individual diminishes us all, and the death of a teacher represents an immense loss to humanity.”
Chukwuma remarked as he highlighted Dr. Chinedu’s potentials of contributing meaningfully to academia.
He elaborated that true development extends beyond physical infrastructure, emphasising, “Civilisation and human progress hinge on how much value a society places on the lives of its individuals.”
Calling attention to the unsettling trend of violent crime in Anambra, Chukwuma stated that the current climate of fear must not be tolerated.
“The ease with which criminals operate in our state is alarming. How can someone be gunned down in broad daylight at a bustling location like Aroma Junction, with no one to challenge the assailants? This should be a wake-up call for us all,” he stated.
He urged the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) government to prioritise the safety of Anambra residents over promises about infrastructural development.
“Roads and bridges serve the living, not the deceased. It is imperative that we recognize this and reallocate substantial security funds to ensure public safety,” he asserted.
Sir Chukwuma also offered his heartfelt sympathies to Dr. Chinedu’s family.
He said his thoughts and prayers are with the family of the late scholar during the difficult time, hoping that they find the strength to endure the profound loss.
