The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State North West Nigeria has formally invited Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to join the ruling party, amid growing reports of his possible defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The Kano State Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Abbas, disclosed this in a statement in Kano, describing the invitation as part of the party’s drive for unity, reconciliation and the overall development of the state.
According to Abbas, the APC is prepared to welcome Governor Yusuf and other NNPP leaders, stressing that their entry would strengthen collective efforts towards advancing Kano State.
“The APC is ready to receive Governor Abba Yusuf with open arms so that, together, we can pool our strengths for the progress and stability of Kano State,” he said.
He noted that, the governor’s reported plan to defect has generated internal tensions within the NNPP, particularly with the party’s national leader and Yusuf’s long-time political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is said to be opposed to the move.
Abbas further stated that, upon his formal defection, Governor Yusuf and other NNPP stalwarts would be received into the APC under the leadership of a former national chairman of the party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in an atmosphere of mutual respect and shared responsibility.
He added that the invitation was aimed at fostering a more united and prosperous Kano State.
Political observers believe the development could significantly alter the political dynamics in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the APC moves to consolidate its influence in the state.
