APC Unware of National Assembly Majority Leadership Selection – Chairman
By Aanya Igomu-Olagunju, Abuja
The National leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC has distanced itself from the selection of Majority leader of the National Assembly announced by the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives upon resumption of plenary.
In the opening address of a meeting between the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the party’s National Working Committee, NWC and APC Governors, Senator Adamu said the party is not aware of any such decision to select and announce Majority leaders of the National Assembly.
You may recall that upon resumption of plenary on Tuesday, July 4 the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives announced the names of lawmakers for Majority leader, Deputy Majority leader, Chief Whip and his Deputy amongst other positions.
However, the APC National Chairman said such a move was contrary to the APC’s tradition of selecting officers for the National Assembly.
“I am just hearing as a rumour now from the online media that there have been some announcements in the Senate and House of Representatives. The National headquarters of the party of the NWC has not given any such information or communicated about the choice of offices.
“And until we formally resolve and communicate with them in writing which is the norm and practice, it is not our intention to break away from traditions. So whatever announcement is done either the President of the Senate, Deputy Senate President, Speaker or Deputy Speaker, is not from this secretariat” Adamu said.
Senator Adamu stated that the party is preparing to hold its caucus meeting and that they would like to hear from the governors in order to minimise the problems and bickering happening in the party.
He added that the NWC would give the APC Governors a detailed account of the party from April 2022 to April 2023.
Speaking, the Chairman of the APC Governors Forum and governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma expressed the commitment of the governors to moving the party forward.
He further commended President Tinubu for the “bold decisions” he has taken so far promising that the APC Governors will work to promote the President’s plans and ideas.
“I think that the party has a responsibility working as progressive governors, speaking for all progressive minds in the country, to support the policies and programs of the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu the president.
“While we’re doing that, we are also ready to market these policies to critical stakeholders, the labour, the political class, the private sector, into understanding the benefits of certain decisions that have been taken off late by the government.
We’re loyal to the party completely, and we assure the leadership of the party that all the governors here are constructive partners in the job of building our party and are willing to work with the party and submit to the ideas and norms of the party” he said.
The APC has scheduled July 10 for its Caucus meeting and July 11 for its National Executive Committee meeting.
The NEC meeting has been long overdue because according to the party’s constitution, the NEC meeting is to be held quarterly, however, the last NEC meeting was held in 2022 which has led some stakeholders to demand the National Chairman call for the meeting.
