Security Agencies urged to stem killings in Rivers State

Nigerian’s governing party, the All Progressives Congress, APC has called on the Nigerian Police and other security agencies to quickly stem the spate of killings of its members in Rivers state, Southern Nigeria.

The APC’s acting National Chairman Mr Segun Oni who made the call while speaking to journalists at the party’s National Secretariat said that the killings were politically motivated.

Mr Oni stressed that the APC would no longer accept the situation, while demanding that the security agencies investigate and bring the killers to justice.

The state is set to have a rerun election on March 19 as election approaches.

Politically-motivated killings
Mr Oni stated that the security situation in Rivers state was an affront on Nigerian Government’s power to protect lives and property within its territory.

The APC calls on the Police and other security agencies to as a matter of urgency, rise up to stem the tide of politically-motivated killings and other forms of violence in Rivers State.

“We tell the security agencies not to continue to take us for granted and we are urging the Federal Government to step up action and know that there is no justification for one dead person. We are saying all these because we want the security to improve not only in Rivers state but in other places in the country,” he said.

Mr Oni also emphasised the need for the Rivers state governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike to perform his constitutional duties of protecting lives and property.

On claims by Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, that about 18 of its members were killed recently in Rivers state, Mr. Oni explained that such killings were heinous and urged the security agencies to improve efforts to protect lives and properties of every citizen.
