The African Women’s Volleyball Club championship got underway on Thursday, as Rwanda’s APR earned a famous 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-23) victory against CFC of Tunisia in their Pool A opener, at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria.
Organised by the Confederation of African volleyball (CAVB) in collaboration with the Nigerian Volleyball Federation (NVF), this year’s edition of the fiesta is hosted in Abuja, by the Nigerian Customs Volleyball Club.
CFC of Tunisia took an early lead and dominated for the first set with some strong hitting for a 25-18 win. CFC came back fighting in the second set and led at the first technical timeout.
They showed good structured play and defence but APR of Rwanda eventually outplayed to win the second set 26-24.
APR also showed their versatility and blocking strength to keep the Tunisians from gaining any real traction in the 3rd set, winning 25-23.
Thereafter, APR launched a passionate comeback and dominated throughout the fourth set, forcing CFC to effect substitutions and time outs.
CFC closed the gap to 23-22 forcing APR to bring in fresh energy to stop the opponents’ attacks, winning 25-23 to seal a famous win.
