Arsenal re-established its five-point lead at the top of the Premier League after a 2-0 home win against Brentford on Wednesday, at the Emirates Stadium in London England.

Arsenal’s bid for a first Premier League title since 2003-04 is looking rock-solid despite several injuries, including to key defenders William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Midfielder Mikel Merino’s 11th-minute header gave Arsenal the lead after a brilliant piece of play by Ben White and Noni Madueke on the wing.

Both sides created chances in the first half but the scores remained 1-0 by halftime.

A stoppage-time goal by substitute Bukayo Saka made the points safe on a tough night at the Emirates Stadium in which they stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to 18.

Bukayo Saka scores against Brentford.

“It is always uncomfortable because all Brentford need is a throw and it’s chaos and adventure,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said.

“One-nil is never enough against them but I thought we dominated the game and created the biggest chances.”

Wednesday’s Premier League results

Arsenal 2-0 Brentford

Brighton 3-4 Aston Villa
