The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), Awka Chapter, Anambra State has upheld education as an essential and powerful tool for achieving lasting peace.

Speaking at a programme organised by the association in Awka to commemorate the International Day of Education, Dr Vincent Chukwukadibia Onwughalu, Capoon, stated on behalf of the association that this year’s theme: ‘Learning for Lasting Peace’ is timely and instructive.

He said “first, the United Nations recognizes the disruption of peace globally, and a need to strategize on how to achieve lasting peace. Second, education is an essential and powerful tool to achieving lasting peace.

“It is important to note that in the absence of peace, no meaningful thing would be achieved. And one of the ways we identified to achieve lasting peace is through the instrumentality of education. The role of education in developing a person, who in turn develops society, cannot be overemphasized.”

Dr Onwughalu added that education remains a veritable tool to drive and engender peace that will yield sustainable development in the society, build capacity to interrogate and proffer meaningful solutions at all times.

He lauded the government of President Tinubu and urged him to do more for the youths in the education sector.

The lead speaker at the hybrid Webinar, a radio host, Ms. Jedidiah Uche, while speaking on the topic, “Education, a Means to Development, “lamented that some Nigerians hold certificates they could not defend which makes them to become influence instead of influencer for positive change.

“It is not everybody that has a certificate is educated. It is because people have placed enormous emphasis on the certificate and not on what needs to be learned which is more important.”

Uche, while emphasising that skills one acquired should authenticate the certificates issued to the person, argued that those truly educated in character and learning should be job creators and develop the society rather than seeking for non-existent white-collar jobs.

Earlier, the moderator, Mr. Emmanuel Udeh, while noting that education has key roles in updating people in all ramifications, maintained that every educated person has something to offer.

He disputed the view that uneducated people are the ones controlling public affairs while the educated roam the streets.
