The Conference of Alumni Associations of Nigerian Universities CAANU has urged the Nigerian government to give the funding of the Universities the attention that it requires.

The Association also called on the government for unalloyed commitment to provision of infrastructures, equipment and facilities to the universities to ease the process of teaching and learning in a conducive environment.

These appeals were made in a statement signed by the Chairman of CAANU, Professor Ahmed Tijjani Mora, during the 2022 first quarter meeting of the alumni held in Ibadan Oyo State.

The Alumni regretted the ongoing industrial action by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU saying the action was as a result of the failure of the fulfilment of the 2009 agreement.

According to the Association, the federal and State governments should also desist from politicising the creation of universities when the government is unable to fund the already established ones”

In its resolution, the conference urged the federal government to fulfill the agreements between the government and the universities labour unions.

“The government should also involve critical stakeholders like the representatives of Vice Chancellor and universities alumni in subsequent negotiations with university labour unions”

“The recurrent strike actions are already killing the already comatose university system in the country,” CAANU added.

The conference implored Universities Alumni Associations to imbibe the culture of Annual Alumni Intervention project to their university.

“They should prioritise the need of the university for capital projects, while investors, sponsors and philanthropists should be partnered when necessary.
