ATCON to Host Stakeholders’ Meeting with State Commissioners, Others

The National Executive Council of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has concluded plans to host a one-day strategic stakeholder meeting with the 36 state commissioners, including those from the FCT, permanent secretaries, and heads of ICT agencies in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The meeting, themed “Harnessing States’ Potential through the Applications of Technical Efficiencies,” aims to highlight the importance of connectivity in driving innovation and the digital economy.

ATCON President Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere emphasized the crucial role of state governments working with telecom operators to eliminate obstacles to widespread broadband through constructive dialogue.

The association outlined several strategic objectives for the meeting:

  1. Discuss the status of the Nigerian National Broadband Plan (2020-2025) and the 2023-2027 Strategic Blueprint of Dr. Bosun Tijani.
  2. Encourage telecom operators to establish a presence in all states and promote capital importation to states ready for development through communications, innovation, and the digital economy.
  3. To get state support for initiatives aimed at advancing telecommunications infrastructure across Nigeria.
  4. Establish a formal method to resolve issues related to the right of multiple taxation, and related concerns.
  5. Sign a memorandum of understanding with ATCON to prevent the destruction and shutdown of base stations, fostering collaboration with state governments to enhance broadband penetration and address poverty and unemployment.

Key figures invited to participate include AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum; Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy; Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory; and Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission. Selected telecom CEOs, commissioners, and heads of agencies will serve as panel discussants, according to the statement.
