Athletics Federation Targets African Games, Paris Olympics Glory
The Chairman of Competitions Organising Committee of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Omatseye Nesiama, said the Federation is focused on delivering good results at the forthcoming African Games in Ghana and Olympics Games in Paris later in 2024.
Nesiama made the statement at a news conference on Thursday in Lagos.
“I want all athletics loving Nigerians to know that we are a fresh committee dealing with a fresh mandate and we are doing things in line with best practices,” Nesiama said.
“We have to clean up the stable and also prove that with little funds we can manage and organise quality competitions.”
Nesiama also said steps would be taken to motivate athletes to give their best during the competitions ahead.
“This new approach by the AFN will restore confidence, integrity and trust that all sponsors look forward to,” he added. “They would be confident to deal with us.”
“The leadership and members of the various committees put in place by the AFN Board last month are known to have the right pedigree and track records to deliver.”
President of the AFN, Tonobok Okowa, said the board would not be distracted in the implementation of some important assignments ahead and that the AFN was focused on delivering more than ever before.
“Those people whose aim is to cause trouble within the board or distract the athletes from giving their best should stay away,” Okowa said. “The athletes are moving into camp soon, and they need high level of concentration.”
“It is noteworthy to state that a good number of members of Team Nigeria Athletics in the USA and Europe have been returning excellent timing this season ahead of three major international events, the African Games, World Indoor Championship and the Olympics.”
The African Games are expected to be held in Ghana between March 8th – 23rd, while the Paris Olympic Games will hold from July 26th – 11 August, 2024.
