Australia has announced plans to build a 63,000-seat stadium and a world-class aquatic centre for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, scrapping previous controversial proposals.

Queensland Premier Unveils New Olympic Plan

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli revealed the revised plans, including the Brisbane Stadium in the city’s heart and an aquatic centre capable of hosting 25,000 fans.

“Finally, Queensland has a plan. The time has come to just get on with it. And get on with it we will,” Crisafulli stated.

Brisbane was awarded the 2032 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in July 2021, marking Australia’s third time hosting the Games after Melbourne 1956 and Sydney 2000.

Scrapping Costly Old Plans

The previous government’s plan involved expanding the Gabba cricket ground and building a 17,000-seat indoor stadium, but Crisafulli dismissed it as a waste of billions on temporary venues with no lasting legacy.

The new 63,000-seat stadium is envisioned as a world-class venue for major sporting events beyond the Olympics. Temporary seating will expand the national aquatic centre’s capacity to 25,000, set to host swimming, diving, and water polo.

Athletes’ Villages and Venue Upgrades

The main athletes’ village will be constructed at the Brisbane Showgrounds, with additional villages on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Several smaller venues, including the Queensland Tennis Centre and Gold Coast Hockey Centre, will also receive upgrades.

Although official costs have not been disclosed, Australia has earmarked approximately $4 billion for Olympic infrastructure.
