Austria nominates new chancellor

Austria’s senior government coalition party will nominate the head of the country’s state railways as the country’s chancellor after the abrupt resignation of the previous leader.

Vienna’s mayor, Michael Haeupl, revealed the nomination of Christian Kern as chancellor and party chief as he and other Social Democratic leaders assembled.

Chancellor Werner Faymann bowed out earlier this week, with the Social Democrats smarting from a string of electoral losses to the right and a split between proponents and opponents of Faymann’s hard-line migrant policies.

Report said Kern still faces a potential hurdle, the centrist People’s Party, the junior coalition partner, had signalled that it would accept only a Faymann replacement who backs the tough migrant restrictions.
