Barkindo’s demise is a loss to nation – Gbajabiamila, Tinubu
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, have described the demise of the Secretary-General, Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, Mohammed Barkindo, as a loss to the nation.
In a statement on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, titled ‘Gbajabiamila mourns OPEC scribe, Barkindo,’ the speaker noted that Barkindo had during his lifetime represented Nigeria on the international scene creditably.
The statement partly read, “Speaker Gbajabiamila described Barkindo’s period as the OPEC Secretary-General as one of the most noteworthy in the organisation’s history.
“While praying for the repose of the soul of Barkindo, the Speaker sent his heartfelt condolences to OPEC, the Nigerian Government and the people and government of Adamawa State, especially the Barkindo family.”
Also, Tinubu described the loss of the secretary-general as a loss to the county and the international community.
In a press statement on Thursday signed by the Director of his media office, Tunde Rahman, he said, “Nigeria just lost Barkindo, an illustrious son and an outstanding professional in the global oil industry.
“Dr. Mohammed Barkindo represented our country well in the last six years as Secretary-General of OPEC. His term in OPEC brought stability to the global oil industry. He was a positive influence in mobilising consensus in dealing with the global energy crisis.”
Recall that on July 5, 2022, the Late Secretary-General was in attendance at the opening ceremony of the 21st edition of the Nigeria Oil and Gas (NOG) Conference and Exhibition, Abuja.
He expressed his joy in being back in Nigeria and meeting old friends.
He further stated the industry’s challenges, assuring stakeholders of OPEC’s consistent support towards ensuring a solid energy future for Nigeria, Africa, and the global economy.
