The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Environment, Honourable Ebi Ben Ololo, has urged the Federal Government to build new dams, clear blocked canals, and improve drainage systems to mitigate flooding in Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview, Ololo emphasised that these measures would enable the free flow of water into the Atlantic Ocean, reducing the destruction of properties and loss of lives during flooding seasons.

In Bayelsa State, the Ministry of Environment has taken steps to reduce flooding, including sensitising communities on radio, providing amenities for affected areas, and opening blocked canals and rivers.

The state has also invested in infrastructure development, including constructing roads linking six Local Government Area headquarters.

Ololo highlighted the state’s vision for a cleaner and healthier environment, with a focus on waste management and community engagement.

He appealed to the Federal Government to assist Bayelsa State in addressing flooding issues, particularly in communities like Biseni, which is below sea level and prone to severe flooding.

The Commissioner also noted challenges facing the Ministry, including deforestation and air pollution caused by oil exploration activities.

He advocated for increased revenue allocation to the state, suggesting that the 13% currently allocated should be increased to 50%.

By addressing these issues, Ololo believes that Bayelsa State can become a better place for its residents, with improved infrastructure, reduced flooding, and a healthier environment.
