More than 200 primary and secondary school teachers have been selected to undertake an intensive five – day training programme for improved teaching methods and enhanced standards.
The teachers capacity building programme is jointly sponsored by the government of Bayelsa State, south-south Nigeria and the British Council in Nigeria.
The major agency responsible for the training programme is the Bayelsa State Educational Development Trust Fund (BEDTF) alongside the Teachers Training Registration and Certification Board (TTRCB).
Flagging of the exercise, the Commissioner for Education in Bayelsa State, Mr. Gentle Emelah remark that prioritising training of teachers was one of the approaches government was adopting to improve learning outcome.
Represented by the Director Examinations and Records, Mr. Monday Eke, the commissioner expressed appreciation to the BEDTF for partnering with the British Council to achieve the desired success.
Also speaking during the flagging off ceremony, the Executive Secretary of the BEDTF, Mrs. Alice Atuwo described the capacity building programme as fundamental for the quality of education.
Atuwo stated, “the BEDTF believes that for Bayelsa State to make meaningful progress in the education sector, the drivers must acquire the requisite and contemporary knowledge and skills required for delivery.
“It is this disposition that has propelled the Fund to seek for collaboration, which was openly offered to us by the British Council,” she noted.
Continuing, she said, “this collaborative initiative aims at enhancing the capacity of educators, school administrators and improve teaching methodologies, management as well as impactful teaching outcomes.”
Similarly, the Acting Chairman, Professor Francis Sikoki equally appreciated the British Council for one again responding to the requested seeking collaboration by providing the much needed educational resources.
On the other hand, the Acting Chairman of the TTRC, the critical facilitator of the capacity building programme, Mr. Peremoboere Ogola noted that out of 10 training sessions arranged for teachers in Bayelsa State, the BEDTF has funded eight.
Giving an overview of the programme, the Head, English and Schools at the British Council Nigeria commended the Bayelsa State government for its vivid and exemplary commitment to educational development.
He explained that the 200 participants would be trained on the application of new teaching methods, use of digital tools and a host of other techniques.
