The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Muhammad Fadah, has advised Corps Members who will be engaged as polling officers during the 2023 general elections in the country to abide by the electoral laws by being a vanguard of national unity.

He made the call on Friday while addressing the 2022 Batch ‘C’ Corps Members at the Orientation Camps in Yobe and Jigawa States, Northern Nigeria.

In a statement released by NYSC Director, Press and Public Relations, Mr. Eddy Megwa, Fadah stressed the need for Corps Members to be impartial umpires, warning that they must resist being used by anyone to commit fraud. He said the nation reposed great confidence in the NYSC because of their contributions to the credible conduct of past elections, which also earned the Scheme accolades from local and international observers.

General Fadah, who earlier congratulated the Corps Members on the successful completion of their studies, urged them to remain disciplined throughout the service year.

He enjoined them to shun cybercrimes, cultism, drug abuse, trafficking, and other vices and use social media to promote national unity and integration. “Avail yourselves to the opportunities for self-employment provided through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme of the Scheme. Many of your predecessors who embraced the programme are now owners of flourishing businesses and are creating jobs for others.”

The DG implored the Corps Members to interact freely, appreciate their host communities’ culture, build lasting friendships, identify the felt needs of their host communities, and initiate projects that would improve their standard of living. “If it becomes necessary to travel, you must get permission. Avoid travelling at night, make sure you board vehicles at designated motor parks and be security conscious at all times.”

Welcoming the Director General, the Yobe State Coordinator, Mrs. Hafsat Yerima, said 836 Corps members, 492 males, and 344 females, were registered in the Camp. While in the Yobe camp, General Fadah inspected the ongoing Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development training centre, which is at the roofing stage.

In Jigawa State, the Coordinator, Mrs. Aishatu Adamu, informed the Director General that all the 1,203 Corps Members registered had adapted to the disciplined nature of the Camp. They attributed the success recorded to the Camp officials’ teamwork and the high discipline level among Corps Members.
