The Government of Benue State, North Central Nigeria, in collaboration with an NGO, Christian Aid, have organised a two-day residential learning and reflection meeting as part of measures to cushion the effect of recent attacks on Communities in the state.
The aim of the meeting was particularly to assess the START FUND 963 intervention, which was implemented in response to violent attacks on the Yelewata community in Guma LGA.
The meeting, which held in Lafia, brought together government officials, humanitarian partners, and community stakeholders to review achievements, identify gaps, and plan for future humanitarian coordination.
Supported by a grant of £249,700 (₦500 million), Christian Aid and Ohonyeta Caregivers Foundation reached over 10,500 individuals across three IDP camps.
The meeting acknowledged assistance including cash transfers, non-food items, hygiene sensitisation, dignity kits, and psychosocial support.
The Director General, Bureau for International Cooperation and Development, BICD, Dr. Aondoaseer Viashima, presided over the meeting, which was attended by top state functionaries.
The participants praised the transparent and inclusive approach of Christian Aid and stressed the importance of coordination to avoid duplication of aid.
Key discussions included the need for stronger coordination, improved data-sharing, and linking short-term relief with long-term development.
A statement by Information Officer of the Agency, Mrs. Juliet Okenyi maintained that Community engagement, accountability, and transparency were also highlighted as crucial aspects of successful humanitarian efforts in Benue State.
For their part, participants acknowledged the ongoing security challenges in Guma and Makurdi and emphasised the importance of early warning systems, collaboration with security agencies, and risk management in program design.
The statement adds that the reflection meeting showcased Benue State’s commitment to effective and sustainable humanitarian action, setting a model for other states and partners to follow.
