Benue State Confirms Outbreak of Lassa Fever

The Government of Benue State in North Central Nigeria has officially confirmed an outbreak of Lassa Fever, with 58 cases reported so far, including among health workers.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services in Benue State, Dr. Paul Ejeh Ogwuche confirmed the outbreak during an interview with Voice of Nigeria.

He expressed concerns about the consumption of rodents and a high-risk delicacy and issued a warning for locals to avoid it to prevent further health risks.

He said the Ministry of Health and Human Services is fully dedicated to safeguarding lives, strengthening disease surveillance, and enhancing healthcare delivery in the state.

According to the ministry’s data, four individuals have succumbed to the disease, while four health workers have contracted it in the course of administering treatment to patients.

He informed that despite the Lassa Fever outbreak, no cases of Dengue fever have been reported.

Dr. Ogwuche emphasized the ministry’s intensified efforts to raise awareness about the disease and its transmission in order to prevent further spread.

He announced that the Ministry has engaged with media, traditional leaders, and religious figures to educate the public about the risks.

The Commissioner acknowledged ongoing collaboration with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and international partners like WHO and UNICEF to provide technical support and logistics.

Voice of Nigeria confirmed that an Emergency Response Team has been activated at the state level, and health workers trained and equipped to respond to emergencies.

Regarding the ongoing strikes by medical professionals at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ogwuche acknowledged the negative impact of the strike on the state and assured that the government is actively working to resolve the situation and ensure the continuity of essential services.

“This administration remains committed to enhancing healthcare services, with significant investments in infrastructure, equipment, and healthcare personnel.”
