Benue State University Expands Commitment With Establishment Of Agriculture Faculty

The Benue State University, Makurdi in North Central Nigeria has announced the establishment of a new Faculty of Agriculture to enhance its existing Centre for Food Technology and Research (BSU- CEFTER).

This decision was approved by the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, in a move to further address post harvest management challenges and offer postgraduate education opportunities.

During the 10th anniversary celebration of the BSU- CEFTER, Vice Chancellor Professor Joe Tor-Iorapuu shared plans for the new faculty, emphasizing its role in supporting the center’s food technology innovations.

Currently, the BSU-CEFTER operates six mini factories producing quality cassava flour products and other food items.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted the goal to increase admission spaces while providing students with entrepreneurship skills, focusing on the importance of agriculture in food production and management.

He stressed the impacts of agriculture in supporting livelihoods, building economies and improving food security.

With a commitment to excellence in education, research, and innovation, Benue State University he said aims to create a sustainable environment for growth and development.

He added that the university also plans to continue its partnerships with international institutions and organizations to ensure food security not only in Nigeria but across the African continent.

Speaking in an interview with Voice of Nigeria on the  anniversary celebration, the Director of CEFTER, Professor Barnabas Achakpa-Ikyo,  highlighted the center’s progress in advancing higher education and food technology.

He boasted that with over 30 international students enrolled, CEFTER has established itself as a recognized international center with a focus on research and innovation.

Despite facing challenges, including funding constraints and misconceptions among locals, he noted that CEFTER remains committed to its goal of promoting sustainable practices for economic development and food security.

Looking ahead, the center plans to secure additional grants and partnerships to sustain its operations beyond the World Bank’s support cycle”.

With a vision to become one of the top centers of excellence in Africa, professor Achakpa-Ikyo maintained that CEFTER aims to set new standards in agriculture education and research, impacting the lives of students, local farmers, and communities in the region.
