Foundation Urges Government To Prioritise Policies On Elderly

0

Fantswam Foundation, a non-governmental organisation in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has urged governments at various levels to prioritise the welfare of aging citizens.

Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Comfort Kazanka, made the call in Kafanchan on Tuesday, during a visit to the Chairman of Jema’a Local Government Area.

Kazanka said that many elderly people were lonely and poor, adding that issues affecting their health, social and economic well-being should be improved to make life easy for them.

She said that Nigeria needed to do more towards achieving universal health coverage, especially for the aged.

She said that based on a survey the foundation undertook recently, some of the challenges faced by the elderly include lack of access to quality healthcare, accommodation, feeding, and inability to foot utility bills.

According to her, the government ought to formulate policies that would ensure the aged are given priority in public places such as banks and hospitals.

She said that such policies are necessary to prevent the elderly from standing in queues for long periods due to their declining strength.

Responding, the council chairman, Mr Yunana Barde, assured of his administration’s resolve to always support the cause of the elderly.

Barde said the council was ready to give the needed support to individuals and organisations that bear the burden of caring for the elderly.

Partners Strategise To Vaccinate Millions Of Children

0

Global partners and NGO’s has announced a new effort: “The Big Catch-up”, to vaccinate millions of children and restore immunisation progress lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic saw essential immunisation levels decrease in over 100 countries, leading to rising outbreaks of measles, diphtheria, polio, and yellow fever.

It said that the “Big Catch-up’ was an extended effort to lift vaccination levels among children to at least pre-pandemic levels and endeavors to exceed.

Led by a broad range of national and global health partners, the Big Catch-up also aims to ensure stronger primary health care services for essential immunisation in the future.

Director-General of, the World Health Organisation Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, said millions of children and adolescents, particularly in lower-income countries, have missed out on life-saving vaccinations, while outbreaks of these deadly diseases have risen.

Ghebreyesus said the organisation was supporting dozens of countries to restore immunisation and other essential health services.

‘ Catching up is a top priority. No child should die of a vaccine-preventable disease,” he said.

Also, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said that routine vaccines were typically a child’s first entry into their health system.

According to her, children who missed out on their early vaccines are at added risk of being cut out of health care in the long run.

The longer we wait to reach and vaccinate these children, the more vulnerable they become and the greater the risk of more deadly disease outbreaks.

“Countries, global partners, and local communities must come together to strengthen services, build trust and save lives,” she said.

Chief Executive Officer, Gavi the Vaccine Alliance Dr Seth Berkley, said the partners could not allow a legacy of the pandemic to be the undoing of many years’ work, protecting more and more children from deadly, preventable diseases.

Global health partners, working with governments and communities, must do everything we can to protect the life of every child,” Berkley said.

President of Global Development at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Dr Chris Elias, said vaccines were a public health triumph.

The incredible progress that has been made towards ending polio and reducing the incidence of infectious diseases is the direct result of thousands of dedicated global partners and local health workers who have worked to immunise millions of children.

“We must double down to reach all children with the vaccines they need to live healthier lives and ensure that future generations live free of preventable diseases like polio,” Elias said

Excitement As Nigerian National Taekwondo Federation Camp Opens

0

The Nigerian National Taekwondo team camp in Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State are in a good mood as more athletes arrive for the two weeks of intense training.

The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation had invited 32 athletes and 3 officials for a two-week national camp to prepare the athletes for the international competition qualifiers.

The Nigerian Taekwondo Head Coach John Victor expressed his excitement to see some of the invited athletes already on the ground.

“I came in this evening and I’m really happy with the number of athletes already on ground. It shows the drive everyone wants to put into the camp. Some of the athletes here have not seen each other after the last National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta, so it is good they will be camped together in one building” he said.

Coach Victor also revealed how the Federation selected the athletes invited for the two weeks exercise.

For this camp, we in the coaching crew sat and looked at the various areas we need to work with. All athletes that did well at the Sports Festival and other competitions were picked on technical grounds so as to achieve what we want ahead of the tournament. Don’t forget that funding is also a key part but we have a working president in the Federation who is making sure this camp holds” he said.

On what to expect during the two weeks of camping, Coach Victor said “We have not met since the Sports Festival, so now we have to check the athletes’ fitness, run tests and make sure they are both tactically and technically fit and well prepared for major tournaments”.

The Taekwondo camp runs from the 24th of April to the 6th of May.

We Are Probably On Verge Of New World War- Putin Ally

0

An ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that the world was probably on the verge of a new world war, and the risks of a nuclear confrontation were rising.

The world is sick and quite probably is on the verge of a new world war,” Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Putin’s powerful security council, told a conference in Moscow.

He said “such a new world war was not inevitable,” but the risks of a nuclear confrontation were growing and more serious than concerns about climate change.

Putin says, “The world faces the most dangerous decade since World War Two. He casts the war in Ukraine as an existential battle with an aggressive and arrogant West and has said that Russia will use all available means to protect itself against any aggressor.

The United States and its allies have condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as an imperial land grab. Ukraine has vowed to fight until all Russian troops withdraw from its territory and says “Russian rhetoric on nuclear war is intended to intimidate the West into curbing military aid.

Trump Faces Civil Trial For Rape Allegation

0

Former President Donald Trump is facing a civil trial over an allegation that he raped an advice columnist nearly three decades ago.

Jury selection is due to begin on Tuesday in a New York federal court.

Mr Trump has denied E Jean Carroll’s accusation that he attacked her in a Manhattan department store. He has said “she made up the claim for publicity.”

Though this is not a criminal case, the consequences for Mr Trump could nevertheless be serious.

If Ms. Carroll wins the lawsuit. It would be the first time the former president – who has been the subject of more than two dozen such allegations – would be found legally responsible for a sexual assault.

Mr Trump is facing a wave of other legal troubles, including more than two dozen felony counts over payment of hush money to an adult film actress and an investigation into his alleged role in the US Capitol riot on 6 January 2021.

Mr Trump is also juggling his ongoing bid for the White House next year.

Accusation
Ms Carroll, 79, says the attack occurred at a Bergdorf Goodman store in Manhattan in late 1995 or early 1996.

The pair had bumped into each other while shopping, she said. Mr Trump then allegedly asked her for advice when buying lingerie for another woman and jokingly asked her to model it for him. But once in the changing rooms, Ms. Carroll said the real estate tycoon lunged at her, pinned her against a wall, and assaulted her.

Ms Carroll, whose “Ask E. Jean” advice column has appeared in Elle magazine since 1993, claims she managed to push him off after a “colossal struggle.

She did not report the alleged encounter to police, her complaint said, because she “was in shock and did not wish to think of herself as a rape victim.”

Two of Ms. Carroll’s friends, Carol Martin and Lisa Birnbach, have said the writer told them about the alleged incident within days. Ms. Martin and Ms. Birchbach are on the list of witnesses that Ms. Carroll may call to testify.

Multiple Denials
Mr Trump has issued multiple denials in the years since Ms. Carroll came forward with her allegations in 2019.

He has described her claims as a “complete con job” on his social media platform Truth Social, saying the alleged rape “never happened.” During an October deposition for the case, Mr Trump repeated his denials, adding that his accuser is “not my type.”

It is so far unclear if Mr Trump will make an appearance during the trial, which is expected to last up to two weeks.

He is not required to attend, and Ms. Carroll’s lawyers have said they do not plan to call him as a witness.

Lawyers for the accuser plan to play to jurors a recording, known as the Access Hollywood tape, in which Mr Trump is heard boasting about grabbing women’s genitals. Lawyers for Ms. Carroll also plan to call other women who say they were attacked by Mr Trump to testify at the trial.

The criminal ‘statute of limitations’ for this case has long expired.

Typically, the statute of limitations for people to bring civil lawsuits over sexual assault in New York is three years, meaning it has long lapsed.

But in 2022, New York passed the Adult Survivors Act, which allowed a one-year period for victims to file sexual assault lawsuits in the state over claims that would have otherwise exceeded statute limitations.

Ms. Carroll filed her lawsuit against Mr Trump almost immediately after the law took effect.

India To Surpass China As Most Populous Nation- UN

0

India’s population is expected to surpass China by the end of April says the UN.

India will be the world’s most populous country hitting almost 1.43 billion people and eclipsing an ageing China, says the United Nations.

By the end of this month, India’s population is expected to reach 1,425,775,850 people, matching and then surpassing the population of mainland China,” the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs said in a statement on Monday.

Last week, the UN’s annual State of World Population report said the milestone would come by midyear 2,023 when it will have 2.9 million people more than China.

The Indian government, which has not done a census since 2011 and delayed the 2021 one due to the pandemic, has not officially commented on the UN estimates.

The timing of when India surpasses China in population will likely be revised once India conducts its next census,” director of the UN population division, John Wilmoth said at a news conference at UN headquarters in New York City.

India and China are neighbours and have a complicated relationship, including robust trade ties and a long-running border dispute. The United States and its allies increasingly see India, the world’s largest democracy, as a counterweight to China.

Ministries Urge Nigerian Citizens In Sudan To Remain Calm

Nigeria’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development have expressed concern over the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan.

In a joint statement by the two Ministers, Geoffrey Onyema and Sadiya Umar Farouq, they empathized with the entire civilian population in the country, including the Nigerian students, and other members of the Nigerian community caught up in the on-going crisis between the Sudanese Army and the Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The Ministers noted with concern how some of the students are trying to find their way to borders of either Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia or Chad on their own.

In line with the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari, the Humanitarian and all its agencies comprising the Humanitarian Ministry and all its relevant agencies, are working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigerian Missions in the countries bordering Sudan, as well as with other relevant stakeholders especially the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, Federal Ministry of Health, the Nigerian Armed Forces, National Intelligence Agency, NIA and International. Humanitarian Organisations such as International Organization for Migration, IOM to immediately evacuate the  Students and other affected Nigerian citizens.

The Ministers, therefore, urge parents to advise their wards that while concerted efforts are being made to evacuate them, the students should endeavour to remain calm and maintain constant communication with officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan for instructions and updates.

Furthermore, they are also advised to guard against undertaking the treacherous journey to the borders on their own, in view of the dangers involved.

On this note, the Ministers emphasised that concrete plans are underway, to deploy, very shortly, air transport to evacuate all stranded Nigerian citizens through the identified safe transit areas back home to Nigeria in safety and dignity.

United Lead Chelsea In Race For Osimhen

0

Manchester United are reportedly ahead of Chelsea in the race to sign Napoli forward Victor Osimhen during this summer’s transfer window.

The Nigeria international has been in impressive form for his Italian side during the 2022-23 campaign, scoring 26 goals and registering five assists in 32 appearances in all competitions.

Osimhen has netted 21 Serie A goals this term, with his form a key contributor to the Naples giants sitting 17 points clear of second-placed Lazio at the top of the table.

Osimhen On Verge Of UCL History

The 24-year-old was unable to help his side reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, though, with AC Milan running out 2-1 winners in the two-legged quarter-final affair.

Osimhen still has another two years left to run on his current deal, but there has been a host of speculation surrounding his future ahead of the summer window.

Man United and Chelsea have both been heavily linked with the Nigerian, while Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be keen to secure his signature.

According to Football Insider, Man United are ahead of Chelsea in the race, with the latter expected to find it difficult to meet Napoli’s huge asking price in the summer market.

The Blues will need to sell a number of players this summer in order to keep within the Financial Fair Play restrictions due to their huge spending over the last couple of windows.

Chelsea are also almost certain to miss out on Champions League football for the 2023-24 campaign, with the club currently sitting down in 11th spot in the Premier League table, 20 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, who also have a game in hand.

Any deal for Osimhen is likely to cost in excess of £100m, and it is unclear how much money will be available to Man United head coach Erik ten Hag this summer due to the ownership situation at the club.

The Glazer family are in talks over a sale, with Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe seen as the favourites to buy the club in a deal that could be worth close to £6bn, but the current owners could yet decide against a full sale and instead bring in investment.

Man United have also been heavily linked with Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane, but a deal for the England captain could be incredibly complicated, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy unlikely to allow the club’s all-time leading goalscorer to join a domestic rival.

Osimhen made the move to Napoli from Lille in the summer of 2020, and he has represented the Italian side on 94 occasions, scoring 54 goals and registering 14 assists in the process.
