“Thank God there was no casualty. I also inspected the 3 other light masts & the effects of age & weather elements were visible. Clearly, they are also suspect after 51 years,” Dare said.

“Based on my assessment, advice of experts and in the interest of public safety, with the temporary closure of the stadium and surrounding facilities, proper assessment and necessary action will be taken soon.”

“The concession process towards fully privatising the Surulere Stadium which began last year will be expedited by the Federal Government through the ICRC towards a comprehensive rehabilitation and upgrade of the 51 years old edifice.”

“We have decided to err on the side of caution, hence the decision to impose extensive restrictions around the stadium. We request the cooperation of anyone who this decision may inconvenience as we cannot (ascertain) the reality on the ground,” Dare concluded.

0

Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic has pulled out of next week’s Madrid Open, organisers announced, with the world number one joining Rafael Nadal on the sidelines for the tennis tournament.

Djokovic, who was unable to play in the US hardcourt swing earlier this year because he has not been vaccinated against COVID, was preparing for the clay season but got knocked out early at the Monte Carlo Masters and Banja Luka Open.

“I didn’t feel well on the court, my legs were slow and my footwork was torpid, many missed shots, totally without direction,” said the 35-year-old Serb after his quarter-final defeat by Dusan Lajovic at the Banja Luka event.

Djokovic said, however, that he was still hopeful of finding his groove on clay before next month’s French Open.

“Wishing you a speedy recovery, we hope to see you back on court as soon as possible, Nole,” organisers said in a statement without giving any details on Djokovic’s condition.

Nadal announced earlier this week that he would miss the Madrid tournament after a setback in his recovery from a hip injury sustained at the Australian Open in January.

The two players share the record for most Grand Slam titles, with 22 each. The French Open, the second Grand Slam of the season, begins on May 28.

Kwamanda disclosed this during a news conference on Saturday in Kano.

The Kano APC chieftain explained that the Senator, representing Kano North Senatorial district, was the right man for the job.

Liverpool Beats Forest 3-2 To Remain In Top-Four

0

Liverpool kept their outside shot at Champions League football next season alive as Diogo Jota scored twice in a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, while Aston Villa’s European charge stalled in a 1-1 defeat at Brentford on Saturday.

At the other end of the Premier League table, Leicester came from behind to secure a first win in 11 games by beating Wolves 2-1 to move out of the relegation zone.

Liverpool thrashed Leeds 6-1 on Monday to rekindle their hopes of a late challenge for a top-four finish but made heavy work of overcoming a Forest side that had scored just five away goals all season prior to their visit to Anfield.

Jota had not scored for a year prior to netting twice at Elland Road earlier in the week, but now has four goals in a week.

All of Liverpool’s goals came from set-pieces as they exposed some shocking Forest defending.

Jota twice put the Reds in front early in the second half, but Forest hit back through deflected efforts from Neco Williams and Morgan Gibbs-White.

However, the visitors twice conceded within three minutes of getting level as Mohamed Salah swept home Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick for the winner 20 minutes from time.

Liverpool move up to seventh and within six points of fourth-placed Newcastle, who host Tottenham on Sunday.

Forest slip to second bottom, one point adrift of safety.

World Bank Tasks Developing Countries On Logistics Performance

The World Bank has released its 2023 Logistics Performance Index (LPI) report, urging developing economies to boost their economic growth through improvements in logistics for goods transportation.

The report is a measure of countries’ ability to move goods across borders with speed and reliability.

This is contained in a statement issued by the World Bank’s Online Media Briefing Centre.

The statement said “the 7th edition of Connecting to Compete, the LPI report, came after three years of unprecedented supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic when delivery times soared.”

It said the LPI, which covers 139 countries, measures the ease of establishing reliable supply chain connections and the structural factors that make it possible. Businesses may boost their supply chain by working with houston trucking companies.

This includes the quality of logistics services, trade- and transport-related infrastructure, and border controls,” the report said.

The statement quoted Mona Haddad, Global Director for Trade, Investment, and Competitiveness, World Bank, as saying “logistics are the lifeblood of international trade.”

“Also trade in turn is a powerful force for economic growth and poverty reduction”, the World Bank official said.

Haddad said the Logistics Performance Index helped developing countries identify where improvements can be made to boost competitiveness.

The statement said; “on average across all potential trade routes, 44 days elapse from the time a container enters the port of the exporting country until it leaves the destination port with a standard deviation of 10.5 days.

“That span represents 60% of the time it takes to trade goods internationally.”

According to LPI 2023, end-to-end supply chain digitalisation, especially in emerging economies, is allowing countries to shorten port delays by up to 70 per cent compared to those in developed countries.

Haddad said; “Moreover, demand for green logistics is rising, with 75 per cent of shippers looking for environmentally friendly options when exporting to high-income countries.”

The statement quoted Christina Wiederer, co-author of the report as saying, “while most time is spent in shipping, the biggest delays occur at seaports, airports, and multimodal facilities.”

Wiederer, who is also the Senior Economist, World Bank Group’s Macroeconomics, Trade & Investment Global Practice Policies, said targeting these facilities could help improve reliability.

He said; “Such policies include improving clearance processes and investing in infrastructure, adopting digital technologies, and incentivising environmentally sustainable logistics by shifting to less carbon-intensive freight modes and more energy-efficient warehousing.”

The report revealed that in the 2023 LPI, the top 12 scorers were high-income economies.

Singapore, with a score of 4.3, is at the top, a position it also held in 2007 and 2012.

“Of the top 12 scorers, eight are in Europe (Finland, scoring 4.2; Denmark, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, scoring 4.1; and Austria, Belgium, Germany, and Sweden, scoring 4.0).

“They are joined by Hong Kong SAR, China; the United Arab Emirates; and Canada”, it said.

The report said most of these economies have for years been dominant players across international supply chain networks.

It said the bottom 10 scorers were mostly low- and lower-middle-income countries and are located on several continents.

They are either fragile economies affected by armed conflict, natural disasters, or political unrest or landlocked countries challenged by geography or economies of scale in connecting to global supply chains”, the statement said.

It said Afghanistan and Libya have the lowest score at (1.9), followed by Somalia at (2.0), Angola, Cameroon, and Haiti at (2.1).

Nigeria has a scored of 2.6 alongside Mali and Guinea.

Ogun State Launches Digital Support Platform for farmers

The Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), in partnership with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), has launched an integrated digital support platform, the Ogun State Farmer Information Management System (OGFIMS).

The platform is to offer one-stop resources to farmers and other value chain actors in the state.

The state Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Adeola Odedina, while speaking during the launch on Saturday in Abeokuta, noted that the initiative was an effort to unleash the full potential of the agricultural sector and ensure that farmers are linked to agricultural opportunities for better productivity.

Odedina said that “the digital agricultural initiative fits perfectly into the agricultural agenda of the state to support small-holder farmers, enhance food security, nutrition security, job creation and link manufacturers to the agricultural process.”

He said through a strategic partnership with the private sector and intentional collaboration with all agencies that have the mandate and resources to support agriculture, the state government has been deliberately inclusive to ensure that small-holder farmers are not cut off from the opportunities created to drive sustainable supply to industries.

“We want to make Ogun State the centre of agricultural excellence, so our smallholder farmers can benefit from opportunities in programmes that will strengthen the value chain and this can only be done if data is available. That is what OGFIMS is aiming at,” Odedina said.

On his part, the Commissioner of Budget and Planning, Mr Olaolu Olabimtan, commended the initiative, saying the government was interested in new ideas that would enhance the agricultural potential of the state.

Olabimtan said that “OGFIMS would add value to the state’s agricultural road map as it would enhance linking stakeholders to opportunities and updating them with information on agricultural best practices.”

In her goodwill message, the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Dr Angel Adelaja-Kuye, said that the digital platform would serve as a database and repository of information and knowledge.

Adelaja-Kuye stated that the platform would keep farmers better informed of new agricultural policies, events, training and business opportunities among others.

Also speaking, the OGSTEP Taskforce Team Lead from World Bank, Abel Lufafa, emphasised the need for all stakeholders to work together to ensure the success of OGFIMS. He noted that accessing farmers for future development would demand a lot of information.

In his address, the lead project consultant, OGFIMS, and lead GermPlasm Health unit, IITA, Dr Lava Kumar, explained that the digital platform was a one-stop resource for information, communication, coordination, registration of farmers and value chain actors.

He added that the digital platform would help in Mapping, advisory, e-marketing and other applications to further improve the agriculture and agric business sector in the state.

The Senator representing Benue Northeast district Gabriel Suswam has urged the incoming administration to make tackling power deficit and insecurity in Nigeria a priority.

Suswam who spoke while responding to questions on agenda setting for the incoming administration , said there was an urgent need to pay attention to the economy and make concerted efforts to grow the GDP of the nation.

He said: “Elections has come and gone and you have court cases that are on-going, but we want the incoming administration to concentrate on issues that have affected Nigerians.

“Issues of insecurity, electricity, issues of power, any government that concentrates on power will change the economy of this country, will enhance the GDP of the country.”

According the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Power, electricity affects all sectors of this economy,

Suswam said; “I believe that there is a whole lot for the incoming administration to do,security, power but once you fix power, industries will be revamped, employment will come back.

According to him, addressing issues of power alone, will be seen to have addressed 60 per cent of the issues in the country.

Suswam also believes that the incoming president should target how best to resolve insecurity, saying that insecurity issues had prevented people from coming to invest in the country.

He expressed concerns that the nation might experience food insecurity if issues of insecurity were not addressed.

This,he said, was a major challenge to farmers, expecially in the rural communities.

He is a true Nigerian that has to build bridges across Nigeria.

“At 63, he has achieved beyond his age, he has done well, has continued to strive in areas, where most of his contemporaries have not been able to, he has also had a bit of controversy and has pulled through.

“And so I believe that he is one Nigeria that should be respected and given his honour,” he said.
