Nigeria records 1.345 billion dollars in non-oil export in first quarter 2023

Nigeria has recorded 1.345 billion US dollars in non-oil export in the first quarter of 2023.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, NEPC, Mr Ezra Yakusak disclosed this in Abuja, while presenting the first quarter progress report on non-oil performance for 2023 at a press briefing.

Mr Yakusak said the amount is an increase of 8.50 per cent over the 1.249 billion dollars recorded in the first quarter of 2022.

According to him, “A total number of 167 products were exported in the 1st quarter of 2023, these products range from manufactured, semi-processed, solid minerals and raw agricultural commodities.

Just like last year, the first quarter also shows that Nigerian products are gradually shifting from its traditional export of raw agricultural commodities to the export of semi-processed and manufactured goods.”

While giving a breakdown of the top-ten products exported in the first quarter of 2023, Mr Yakusak stated that Urea, Cocoa Beans, Sesame Seed, Soya Beans/meal and Cashew nuts/kernels were among the top five.

“A total of 618,184.06 metric tonnes of products worth 75.829 million dollars were exported to 12 ECOWAS countries in the period under review. You may need to note that this figure is 15.6% increase over the 1st quarter exports of 2022.

Of the ten top export companies, Indorama-Eleme Fertilizer and Chemical Limited took the lead with $182.804 million in terms of value while Dangote Fertilizer Limited recorded the second-highest value of US $144,089,083.49 respectively,” he noted.

A total of 30 banks participated in the issuance of 5786 NXPs for the first quarter of 2023 with Zenith Bank PLC processing the highest NXP values at 37.42%, United Bank of Africa (UBA) Plc and First Bank of Nigeria with 11.494% and 10.06% respectively.”

The NEPC boss stated that the 16 Exit Points used within the period under review had seaports in the South-West and South-South accounting for over 90 per cent of the total non-oil export volume.

Mr Yakusak explained that 97 countries, spread among five continents of the world, imported Nigerian products during the period under review adding that the top five countries that imported from Nigeria are Brazil, China, Japan, India and Netherlands.

Regrettably, no African country made the top 10 non-oil export destination.

“We believe that the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will change this Trade trajectory” he said.

Russia Denies Jailed Reporter Consular Visit

0

Russian authorities have denied detained US journalist Evan Gershkovich a consular visit, the foreign ministry in Moscow said on Thursday.

Mr Gershkovich, 31, a reporter with the Wall Street Journal, was detained last month on espionage charges.

He denies the allegations. He appeared in a Moscow court on 18 April and is detained at a former KGB prison.

It comes after the US refused to grant visas to a group of Russian reporters, a move Moscow called “provocative.”

The reporters were supposed to travel to New York to cover Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s visit to the UN Security Council.

The Russian foreign ministry described the decision to deny the visas as an act of “sabotage.”

It said the US had denied the visas “to impede normal journalistic work” and summoned a senior US diplomat to issue a note of protest.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will chair this particular UN Security Council meeting, so the denial of visas for Russian journalists to cover his presence there has particularly angered Moscow.

Mr Lavrov said Russia would neither forgive nor forget the US for the decision, and his deputy Sergei Ryabkov told state media that Moscow “will find formats to respond to this so that the Americans remember for a long time that such things must not be done.”

“In this connection the US Embassy was informed that its request for a consular visit on 11 May to American citizen E Gershkovich, who was detained on charges of espionage activity, has been denied,” the foreign ministry’s statement read.

Mr Gershkovich was detained in March while working for the Wall Street Journal and has been held in prison in Russia on spying charges.

Both Mr Gershkovich and his employer have denied the charges against him, but he could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty of spying.

Russia claims he was trying to obtain classified defence information for the US government.

Reporters Without Borders said Mr Gershkovich was covering the Russian mercenary group Wagner in Yekaterinburg, about 1,600km, 1,000 miles, east of Moscow

Earlier this week, 300 journalists who have worked in Moscow called on the Russian government to release Mr Gershkovich immediately, praising his “long and impressive” record of work, adding that “journalism is not a crime.”

In mid-April, the US ambassador to Russia, Tracey Lynne visited him in prison, where she said he was in “good health and remains strong,” she added.

The Russian foreign ministry said it was looking into “other possible steps” relating to Mr Gershkovich and would notify the US of its decision in due course.

During a hearing in Moscow earlier this month, authorities rejected his legal team’s offer to free him on bail of 50 million roubles, $614,000, or put him under house arrest.

“We Have Equipped Our Military”-President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says the robust plan to improve the security architecture of the country had been realized, with the upgrading of hardware, the building of facilities, training, and equipping of staff and officers, as well as structuring of a welfare system that caters for more than 50,000 children of fallen heroes.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, at a ceremony attended by two former leaders of the country, Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon and President, Goodluck Jonathan, the President said he instituted the recruitment of 60,000 soldiers into the Armed Forces, and thousands graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy and other security institutions to tighten security.

President Buhari presented 81 new, symbolic flags to the various units of the Nigerian Army.

“At the inception of this administration, the nation’s security situation was greatly challenged by the activities of violent non-state actors. Today, I am pleased to specially note that the situation has tremendously improved and I wish to also proudly highlight that we have made remarkable progress in the fight against insurgents, militants, oil bunkers, kidnappers, and other criminal elements in the country.

“This administration has achieved a remarkable transformation of the military in the areas of fighting power, training, operations, manpower, remunerations, and medical services. These are in addition to maintenance efficiency, accommodation, and expansion of forces. The improvements in these areas have collectively enhanced the Army’s capacity to effectively carry out its constitutional mandate,’’ he said.

Weaponry

President Buhari, who endorsed 81 flags for the various units of the Army, noted that the fighting power of our military was at a low ebb as of May 2015, adding “However, 7 years later, its fighting power has increased significantly making it fourth in ranking among African militaries as against seventh in 2015.’’

He said interventions and yearly budgetary allocations to the Army, between 2020 and 2022 alone, had been able to procure hundreds of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, Troops Carrying Vehicles, utility vehicles, tanks, and Armoured Personnel Carriers to augment those earlier procured.

“From 2017 to 2022, significant numbers of new fighting and utility vehicles along with supporting artillery guns, machine guns, rifles, and corresponding ammunition were acquired and inducted into various theatres of operations. This translates to a significant increment in the Army’s equipment holding since 2015.

“With the significant improvement in the fighting power as a result of the procurement of equipment and mission-specific training, the Army was empowered to rejig its operations. Accordingly, the Army has restructured the conduct of its operations to meet current realities.

“The quantum of platforms inducted into the Army since 2015 had enabled troops to take the battle to the terrorists and criminals, particularly in the North East resulting in the recapture of territories hitherto held by the insurgents,’’ the President stated.

President Buhari told the gathering of top security chiefs, traditional rulers, and top government officials, who witnessed the ceremony, that

creation of the Army Aviation was one of the major aspects of the ongoing expansion process in the Nigerian Army.

According to him: “the renewed vigor for the operationalization of the Army Aviation emanated from a strong desire to effectively tackle contemporary security challenges across the country. This unit, when fully operationalized, will provide rapid deployment, close air support, casualty evacuation, and prompt delivery of logistics supply, among other roles.

“As an administration, we have demonstrated commitment to increasing the strength of the Armed Forces in my resolve to secure the country’s challenges. It is instructive to state that from 2015 when I was sworn in as the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces Federal Republic of Nigeria, I facilitated the recruitment of over 60,000 soldiers from Depot Nigerian Army aside from thousands commissioned from the Nigerian Defense Academy Kaduna.’’

Successes

The President said the efforts of the Administration paid-off with records of unprecedented successes, evident in the increased number of neutralized insurgents and those that voluntarily surrendered alongside their families for deradicalization and rehabilitation through Operation Safe Corridor.

“This feat has continued to be replicated in other theatres of operation within the country leading to the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons to their ancestral homes and restoration of economic activities in addition to the contribution of the Nigerian Army to global peace through Peace Support Operations.

“In the area of troops’ welfare, this administration has facilitated the approval of Manual for Financial Administration which has greatly enhanced the pay and allowances of troops. This has no doubt boosted troops’ morale and enhanced their zeal to discharge their constitutional mandate.

“Furthermore, in line with my resolve to cater for the families of deceased personnel, over 50,000 children and wards of personnel who died in active service are on the Nigerian Army scholarships from 2015 to date,’’ he stated.

Infrastructure Development

On infrastructural development, the President said the administration had made determined efforts to surmount the deficit in accommodation and other amenities. As the strength of the Army increased, special interventions were made to construct new barracks accommodations and renovate the old ones.

“So far, hundreds of new blocks of accommodation were constructed and thousands of the old housing units were renovated and remodeled in various formations and units across the country between 2016 and 2022.

“Currently, massive construction works are ongoing in the new Muhammadu Buhari Barracks, Abuja, and other barracks to provide the requisite offices, houses, and facilities to cater for the increasing strength of the Army personnel,’’ he noted.

President Buhari commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, and all the other Service Chiefs and heads of all paramilitary organizations for their commitment and selfless service to this nation.

“The Nigerian Army that we celebrate today, would not have been able to discharge its responsibilities optimally including today’s Trooping and Presentation of Colors without your collaborative support,’’ he said.

Symbols

President Buhari noted that the colors he presented to the units were revered symbols of the identity of a unit, and display a regiment’s battle honors or those inherited from predecessors while playing huge roles in the operational successes of their regiments.

The President explained that the last Trooping and Presentation of Colors Parade was held in 2007, and since then new units had been established and operationalized in line with the increasing commitments of the Army.

“Additionally, existing colors have been extensively involved in multiple operations in various geo-political zones of the country as well as foreign countries, hence deserving of retirement. Today’s ceremony is a continuation of our effort to re-invigorate the fighting spirit of our troops through the inculcation of greater pride in their units.

“Let me use this medium to sincerely commend the officers and men of the Army, all members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their exceptional performances in the various operations across the country,’’ the President added.

Societal Approach Key to Fight Insurgency- Defence Chief

The Armed Forces of Nigeria have reviewed strategies and policies in the fight against the insurgency to ensure that the societal approach is given prominence for the effective attainment of military goals and national development objectives.

The Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor disclosed this during a 2-Day Workshop with the theme “Use of Broadcasting in Complementing the Military in Conflict Mitigation and Management”.

Represented by Director Training Defence Headquarters, Rear Admiral TY Pani, the CDS said that “National security in the country is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach from all sectors of the society”.

According to him, the country has been facing various forms of insecurity in the past decade which include terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, communal clashes, oil theft, and piracy amongst others.

He said, “to curtail this security situation; an all-of-society approach is required”.

CDS noted that the approach involves the participation of the government, security agencies, civil organisations, religious leaders, traditional leaders, the press and the general public.

The Defence Chief said that “the military has been contending with fighting terrorists and other non-state actors in the last decade adding that in order to tackle and subdue the security challenges in the country, several military operations and exercises have been launched by the Armed Forces of Nigeria across the country since 2009”.

He noted that recently, the federal government of Nigeria adopted a non-kinetic approach by developing a policy framework and National Action Plan for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism, NAPPCVE.

According to him, the plan recognizes the integrated roles of the AFN with the larger society as critical, by adopting a whole of Government and whole-of-society approach.

Consequently, the combination of kinetic and non-kinetic efforts has led to a lot of success in the ongoing operations conducted by the AFN across the country.

He said that “one of the benefits of non-kinetic operations is that they can be used to achieve strategic objectives without causing unnecessary damage or loss of life which is especially important in conflicts where civilian casualties must be minimized”.

The Director National Broadcasting Commission, Balarabe Ilelah says organising a workshop on the use of broadcasting and complementing the military conflict mitigation and management or design is very critical.

According to him, Individual spending in Internet security protecting the Nigerian military on behalf of the National Broadcasting Commission as he commended Zalclair Investments Limited for investing in its energy in the promotion that this is quite commendable, and he called on the company not to relent on this effort.

IIelah said that there is no doubt that Nigeria is currently faced with various security challenges, such as banditry and also the context of other security concerns in various sections of the country. “With these challenges, the need for the media to support the military campaign to address this issue”

The Director noted that to capture this, the media should be encouraged by all stakeholders to exhibit professionalism and avoid creating tensions or confusion in the minds of the citizens when reporting security matters.

This is because of its inherent implication on their corporate existence in this case, there are some attributes associated with broadcast media.

According to him, the broadcast should be carefully managed in order not to jeopardise the condition, the code and coordinate and military actions plan or risk the lives of the gallant troops will always try to be very careful in what is important and in doing that they must put at the back of their mind that there are have troops that are all the time sacrificing their lives for the nation so they should be very careful and mindful of such attributes and spontaneity of broadcasting the availability and passiveness for the penetration and receptiveness of radio and television.

And most importantly, the media power of sourcing information. Broadcasting is simultaneous in nature. Therefore, we can reach millions of people at the same time, some of the recipients because they don’t question the integrity and challenge of whatever is transmitted to the media. This idea has been around the NBC that is the National Broadcasting Commission is tasked with the responsibility of regulating the broadcast industry”, he said.

He said that “the Commission deals with this information and ensures that broadcast content is in conformity with the national interest, public interest, national demands of public security; he believes in morality and also public health”.

That means as a broadcaster you have a very heavy responsibility. There is a massive quantity over that which undermines the continued existence of our generation is driven definitely by AB Tech. Therefore, this workshop is timely and most recommended against in-trade media professionals and practitioners, particularly content creators, on how best to produce content by military actions in order to change negative narratives” he explained.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer, of Zakclair Investment Limited, Adebayo Abdulrazak says there has been step-by-step collaboration with the office of the Chief of Defence Staff and Zakclair Investment Limited towards building a robust relationship between the military and the media.

He implored all participants and stakeholders to take advantage of the workshop and its recommendations to move the country forward.

Cervical cancer vaccine available soon—Pfizer

0

A pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, has said cervical cancer may become the first cancer to be eliminated with a vaccine.

In a statement signed by the company and in commemoration of World Immunisation Week, Medical Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, Pfizer, Kodjo Soroh, said there was a need to invest in vaccine research and development.

He said, “Vaccines underpin our global health security by preventing and controlling over 30 infectious diseases, reducing unnecessary hospitalisations, and controlling infectious disease outbreaks. We should not forget that they are one of the world’s most powerful and cost-effective public health tools available and have successfully helped to eradicate, eliminate, and manage many deadly infectious diseases. Smallpox has been eradicated and polio is nearly gone. Cervical cancer could become the first cancer to be eliminated.”

“Vaccines also play a critical role in combating antimicrobial resistance, they can reduce antibiotic use by preventing bacterial infections in the first place, such as with the pneumococcal and meningococcal vaccines, and can also prevent viral infections such as flu, which can provoke secondary infections requiring antibiotics.”

He added that by channelling resources to vaccines, many people would be prevented from life-threatening illnesses.

Soroh said, “Today, more than at any time in history, people are benefiting from safe and effective vaccines to prevent infections and diseases. These injections have protected people of all ages, from newborns to seniors.”

“However, our work is not done. Many viruses and bacteria still present a serious health risk, and so we continue to focus on research and development in new areas, with the goal of adding more approved vaccines to tackle pathogens.”

“By getting vaccinated, you can protect yourself and also avoid spreading preventable diseases to other people in your community. Some people cannot get certain vaccines because they are too young or too old or they have a weakened immune system or other serious health conditions. Those people are less likely to catch a preventable disease when you and others around them are vaccinated against it. Help protect yourself and the people you love by staying up to date on recommended vaccinations.”

“Global vaccination coverage figures are looking up, but they still mask huge inequalities that we cannot afford to ignore. To help protect as many people as possible from a life-threatening illness, we are working to develop and distribute vaccines throughout the world. We have already seen that by channelling resources to the most promising public health opportunities, we can have an impact across all areas of life.”

Subsidy Removal: Council Resolves To Set Up Expanded Committee

The National Economic Council in Nigeria has resolved to set up an expanded committee to look into the timing of the removal of subsidy on petroleum products.

The Council took the decision at its meeting held in the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja and presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, who briefed the media, said the Council agreed to form an expanded committee that would be “looking at the process for the removal.”

According to her, this will include determining the exact time for the removal, the measures that need to be taken to provide support to the poor and the vulnerable and the alternatives that will be put in place.

Mrs. Ahmed said that the committee would also look at measures to ensure that there was sufficient supply of petroleum products in the country.

“So this is a decision that has been taken to expand the committee that is currently working with representatives of the states and it is also will have to be engaging with labour will have to be engaging with petroleum marketers.

“The immediate committee is just comprising the initial finance, the NNPC, the regulator, the downstream upstream regulator, as well as the as the Minister of Finance budget, a national plan.

“So, there’ll be an expanded committee so that it is not just a few people’s thoughts that will guide the process; that there is sufficient consultation taking inputs from key stakeholders into the measures that need to be taken.”

Two laws

Insisting that the subsidy on petrol would not be removed before the transition to the next administration is completed, Ahmed said that two extant laws in the country already have provisions for the removal of subsidy.

“What I said is that it is not going to be removed now, which means it will not be removed before the transition is completed.

“That’s what it means, but then we’ll have two laws that have inadvertently made the provision that we should exit by June.

“So if the committee’s work, which will include the representatives of the incoming administration, determined that the removal can be done by June, then, the work plan will be designed to exit as at June.

“But if the determination is that the period needs to be extended, it will mean that we, as a country, will have to revisit the Appropriation Act for example, because the 2023 Budget only made provision up to June.

“So, if we’re extending beyond June it means we have to revisit the Appropriation Act and do a supplementary or amend the law and also the PIA,” Ahmed explained.

The minister said that the consultation with governors at the meeting of the National Economic Council became necessary to enable government get the inputs from the sub-national governments on the issue of subsidy removal.

One thing that is clear is everybody agreed that the subsidy should be removed very quickly because the cost is not only not efficient it is also not sustainable, and that when the time comes for removal, the removal will be done once and for all,” she said.

While stating that the Council agreed that the removal of subsidy is inevitable, Mrs. Ahmed said measures must be put in place to mitigate the impact on Nigerians.

Court grants Nigerian Government leave to bring 9 grounds against Kanu’s release

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has granted leave to the Nigerian Government to bring nine new grounds of appeal against the release of Biafra agitator, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu who is currently in detention.

The apex court granted leave as part of the Nigerian Government’s amended notice of appeal which is dated 28th October 2022.

A five-member panel of justices led by Justice John Okoro granted the leave on Thursday while ruling on the motion by the counsel to the Nigerian Government, Tijani Gadzali.

Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, Mike Ozekhome, told the court of his motions seeking for bail his client and another seeking his transfer to the Kuje Correctional Facility to get proper medical attention citing his failing health at the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Ozekhome prayed for an accelerated hearing of the matter.

Counsel to Nigerian government Tijani Gadzali while speaking on the motion for the transfer of Kanu from the custody of the DSS, prayed for an adjournment to file a counter affidavit as he just took over the matter.

The court subsequently fixed May 11 for a hearing on the pending motion and the main appeal.

Recall that the Appeal court had on October 13, 2022, cleared Kanu of Alleged treason and terrorism charges against him after dismissing the remaining six counts of charges against him by the Nigerian Government.

The Appeal Court panel faulted the process of Kanu’s extradition back to Nigeria from Kenya on grounds of it being in breach of international protocol.

Another panel of the same court, however, on the 28th of October 2022, reversed its earlier decision ordering a stay of execution pending a hearing and determination of the appeal of the Supreme Court.
