Patients In England At Risk As Doctor Strikes

0

London’s Guy’s St Thomas’ NHS Trust conceded patients could be harmed as managers struggle to staff rotas.

Hospital bosses also voiced concerns over the walkout, which will affect both emergency and planned care.

The British Medical Association has refused to exempt any services but says it has plans to protect patients.

It contrasts with the approach of the Royal College of Nursing and ambulance unions, which excluded key emergency services from strike action.
Instead, the BMA has said it will meet trade union requirements for life-and-limb cover to be provided by considering pulling junior doctors off the picket line if individual hospitals report lives are in immediate danger during the actual strike.

The BMA is after a 35% pay rise to make up for 15 years of below-inflation wage rises, but the government has called the claim unrealistic.

During last month’s junior doctors’ strike, hospitals were able to draft in consultants to provide cover, but with an estimated quarter of them on leave next week – the four-day walkout is immediately after the Easter weekend – NHS bosses are warning this time they fear the worst.

Dr Sara Hanna, who is part of the senior management team at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “I am really worried about next week. I am particularly worried about the ability to staff our rotas. I am hopeful we will have enough doctors but can’t say for sure.

“It is impossible to say there won’t be harm to patients. Junior doctors are an incredibly important part of the workforce”

Junior doctors represent more than 40% of the medical workforce and include those fresh out of university through to experienced medics with more than 10 years of experience. Around two-thirds are BMA members.

Dr Hanna, who is interim head of the trust’s Evelina London Children’s Hospital, said up to half of all planned treatments could be cancelled as the trust redeployed its senior doctors and this is on top of the impact of postponements during previous walkouts.

She said the cumulative impact of this was particularly problematic for children who are growing and developing.
NHS Providers, which represents health managers, said such concerns were widespread.

Chief executive Sir Julian Hartley said “It’s clear from our extensive dialogue with trust leaders that we are in uncharted territory.

“We need a solution to prevent further strikes and we need it now.”

The organisation also released a series of statements provided by hospital chief executives.

One warned: “This is less about what planned routine work gets pulled down and everything about maintenance of safety in emergency departments, acute medicine and surgery. Concerned doesn’t begin to describe it.”

Another said, “I am not confident this time that we can maintain patient safety, as we will not be able to provide the cover.”

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said the government was also concerned that safety was at risk.

We are working with NHS England to put in place contingency plans to protect patient safety. The NHS will prioritise resources to protect emergency treatment, critical care, maternity and neonatal care, and trauma,” he added.

But BMA workforce leads Dr Latifa Patel said there was a jointly agreed system in place with the NHS to ensure patient safety in the event of “extreme or unforeseen circumstances”.

“We met with NHS England four times per day during the last strikes to monitor the situation, but there were no requests for a temporary stoppage of the industrial action to be made. The same proven arrangements will be in place this time.”

And she added: “No one understands better than us – the doctors who care for them – that patients are getting a sub-standard experience 365 days a year from an overstretched and understaffed NHS.

In this brutal work environment, patient care is at risk every day.”

Osimhen Needs Miracle To Play Against Milan

0

Italian Serie A leaders Napoli have expressed doubt in the availability of Nigeria international Victor Osimhen for their crucial UEFA Champions League first leg quarter-finals against AC Milan next week.

Osimhen suffered a muscle injury while on international duty with Nigeria last week, during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau and missed Napoli’s Sunday 4-0 loss against Milan in a Serie A clash at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona last Sunday.

Osimhen World’s Best Striker Says Troost-Ekong

Since joining the Italian outfit from Lille in 2020, Osimhen has grown to become an integral part of Luciano Spalletti’s side and the 24-year-old is enjoying a brilliant season, scoring 25 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions to help Spalletti’s side sit 16 points clear in the Serie A table and reach the Champions League last eight.

While the league is almost a done deal, the Partenopei are still in the race to win the Champions League but the striker’s chances of facing their rivals in the Champions League are looking unlikely.

The striker underwent treatment at Castelvolturno on Tuesday, and according to Sky Sport Italia, Friday will be a key date to know whether the Nigerian will be available in the Champions League next week.

“Napoli confirmed on Tuesday that their star striker underwent therapies in the morning at the club’s training centre in Castel Volturno.

“This means the 24-year-old won’t be available against Lecce on Friday when the Partenopei visit Lecce at the Stadio Via Del Mare”.

Macron Counting On Xi To stop Russia’s war in Ukraine.

0

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to use his influence to help stop Russia’s war in Ukraine.

I know I can count on you to bring Russia to its senses,” he told Mr Xi at the start of talks in Beijing.

Mr Xi said their two countries had the “ability and responsibility” to safeguard world peace.

The French leader is on a state visit to China, which has refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Accompanied by a large business delegation, Mr Macron is also seeking to bolster trade ties. He is joined by European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, who he invited to take part in talks with Chinese leadership.

The visit is being highly scrutinised after years of deteriorating relations between the West and China.”

On Thursday afternoon, Mr Macron was treated to an elaborate military parade in Beijing, before entering closed-door talks with Mr Xi.

The two are expected to hold “a three-way discussion” with Ms von der Leyen – who is in Beijing on Mr Macron’s invitation – later in the evening, and attend a state dinner.

In meetings earlier on Thursday with other top Chinese officials, including the country’s number two Premier Li Qiang, Mr Macron and Ms von der Leyen had called for increased dialogue with Beijing.

Afc Picks Six World Cup Stadia For Asian Cup

0

Six of Qatar’s eight World Cup stadia will be used for the Asian Cup to be staged in the Gulf state next January, the AFC has announced.

But the Lusail stadium used for the World Cup final and the iconic 974 stadia made from containers will not be part of the 24-nation tournament to run from January 12 to February 10.

The Asian Cup was originally meant to be held this year in China but was switched and delayed because of the country’s coronavirus restrictions.

Asian Football Confederation president Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said that “based on Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup last year the Asian Cup will be a true spectacle never before experienced in Asian football history.

“We have every faith that they will showcase their unrivalled hosting capabilities, state-of-the-art infrastructure and warm hospitality,” he added.

Qatar will use the Al Janoub Stadium, Al Bayt Stadium, Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Education City Stadium and Khalifa International Stadium which were all part of the multi-billion dollar infrastructure laid on for the World Cup.

The smaller Jassim bin Hamad Stadium and Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium will also be used, the AFC said.

The 974 stadia near the Doha seafront is scheduled to be dismantled and donated to a developing country. Some containers have already been taken away but authorities have not yet said where the stadium will go.

The 80,000 Lusail stadium where Argentina beat France in the World Cup final on December 18 is also due to be modified but Qatar has made no immediate comment on when that will start.

Sudan Postpones Signing Of Peace Deal

Sudanese leaders have again postponed the signing of a final agreement to re-establish a civilian government as differences within military factions intensify.

Talks continued overnight with negotiations centred on a draft deal that was to be signed.

Report says Sudan has been in a political crisis since October 2021, when the army overthrew a civilian government that ousted long-serving leader Omar al Bashir in 2019.

Violent street protests followed, hundreds of people were killed and many more injured over the last one year and a half.

Last December, the military agreed on a roadmap to hand over power to civilians.

However, the negotiations have stalled due to disagreements over the unification of the national army and the dreaded paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, led by the deputy head of Sudan’s ruling council Mohamed Daglo.

The spokesman for the talks said they were still determined to reach a consensus with the military.

Report says that a final peace deal will unlock millions of dollars frozen by the European Union and the US and help the country’s struggling economy.

Experts Brainstorm On Media Role For National Rebirth

0

The Role of the Media in National Rebirth was the focus of an interactive session organised by the New Dawn Baptist Church on Wednesday in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

Participants included Chief Executive Officers, Managers, and Senior Producers and Editors of media organisations.

They shared experiences and made contributions on how the media can contribute to national rebirth.

In a welcome address, the Lead Pastor of the Church, Samson Adedokun, said Nigeria is in need of a rebirth and the media should be in the forefront of the advocacy.

The interactive session which assessed the media, the pastor said the church was willing to provide necessary support for the industry to improve.

We are in the midst of post-election hangover. We are in the midst of the need for renewal, for regeneration, but the big word for us is the one driving our programme. We are in the need for a rebirth. Our nation has gone through so much and it’s still going through more. Those of us that are residents in Lagos, whether we like it or not, know that we are still trying to reconnect with one another, so there is need for a rebirth and the media is in the forefront of that.”

During panel the discussion on the role of the media in national rebirth, issues ranging from press freedom, media responsibilities, training and retraining of personnel, self regulation, to social media control were highlighted, with experts sharing perspectives on them.

The Chief Executive Officer, Royal Roots Radio and TV, Mr Greg Odutayo, who represented the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria (BON), observed that the Nigerian media had not been responsible in the way it has handled the issue of national rebirth.

Nation building

Without mincing words, I personally believe that a lot of our organisations have been irresponsible. We need to say it to ourselves! We have not handled nation building or national rebirth properly especially at this time that we have just finished election.

“We have allowed our personal biases, we have allowed our personal feelings to and opinions to override national interest. We have not played the role of a gatekeeper, we have not played the role of the referee. We have entered the ring and joined in the fight. That’s not our role as media. The media is supposed to be the fourth estate of the realm. We carry a lot of responsibilities. When the NBC gives you a license, you are holding that license in trust for the country.”

The Zonal Director, National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Dr. Chibuike Ogwumike emphasised the need for reorientation of media workers and that can be achieved through training and retraining.

“And, do we achieve this reorientation without reorienting the public, because in one way of the other, their attitude is also affecting us in the media. It’s very important that we need a change of attitude. We need a change of orientation. In changing our orientation, there is absolute need for training and retraining of the media workforce.”

Adequate research

Another panelist, Abayomi Odeniran, who is the Manager, Programmes, Metro Fm, Lagos, said radio presenters and producers must conduct adequate research on issues they discuss on air in order not to misinform or disinform the listeners.

“I have realised that in recent times, may be because the platforms are there, a lot of people just come in without scrutiny, they come into the space and they are not doing the job as they ought to.

“For radio, because of the sensitivity, because it’s transient, what you air now you may not repeat it again, so the listener go with the information. So, it’s very important that you do not misinform or disinform, and it’s very important that you do your research.”

A Digital Marketing Expert and Social Media Enthusiast, Elizabeth Ajala, urged the media to use the social media space responsibly to facilitate the national rebirth.

The Media Interactive Session, is part of the New Dawn Baptist Church’s contribution to nation building. It’s coming ahead of the dedication of the Church’s building at Prince Yomi Daramola Street, Dideolu Estate, Oniru, Victoria Island, slated for Monday 10th April this year.
