Sudan Hospitals Struggle With Casualties From Battle

0

At the Khartoum Teaching Hospital, people wounded during street battles flowed into the wards. Supplies were running low, with doctors, nurses, patients and their relatives trapped inside for days as the Sudanese capital turned into a war zone.

One of the wards was heavily damaged by shelling.

“We are running out of everything,” Dr. Amin Saad said “We are working with the least possible capabilities. … We’re all exhausted and there is a shortage of physicians.”

Not long afterward, the hospital shut down completely with staff, patients, and relatives stuck inside as clashes raged throughout the neighborhood. It was one of at least 12 hospitals shuttered in the capital area because they were damaged in the fighting, were inaccessible because of clashes, or had run out of fuel, according to the Doctors’ Syndicate.

Khartoum’s hospitals have been thrown into chaos by the explosion of violence between Sudan’s two top generals. People have been unable to leave their homes since Saturday as the two sides engaged in gun battles and bombarded each other with artillery and airstrikes. More than 180 people have been killed and over 1,800 wounded since the fighting erupted, U.N. envoy Volker Perthes said.

There are some 20 hospitals in the capital and the neighboring city of Omdurman. Those that still managed to operate were understaffed and overwhelmed, running low on supplies and struggling with power or water cuts, doctors said.

The sudden outbreak of fighting caught everyone off guard, trapping doctors and nurses inside hospitals, and preventing other staff from reaching the facilities.

“I tried multiple times this past two days but was forced to return home because of the battles,” said Dr. Sara Mohi, who has been unable to get to the hospital where she works in central Khartoum.

The situation is “extremely dire,” said Atiya Abdulla Atiya of the Doctors’ Syndicate.

The World Health Organization said many hospitals in Khartoum reported shortages of “blood, transfusion equipment, intravenous fluids, medical supplies, and other life-saving commodities.”

Staff evacuate patients from the Al-Shaheed Salma kidney treatment clinic amid clashes with gunfire ringing out, staffers ducked and rushed to a gurney with a patient across the street. Another facility, the Police Hospital was evacuated, the syndicate said.

Head of the International Hospital in Khartoum’s northern Bahri district Dr. Ossama al-Shazly, took to social media to appeal for fuel to keep generators running after power was cut to the neighborhood.

The situation is very critical. We want people to provide fuel,” he said, adding that many patients needed surgeries and others were in intensive care units, with no place to evacuate them to.

US Accuses Lula of Encouraging War in Ukraine.

0

The White House has sharply criticised Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for accusing the United States of “encouraging” the war in Ukraine.

Lula said after a visit to China at the weekend that the US needed to start talking about peace in Ukraine.

Visiting Brazil, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met Lula and thanked Brazil for its efforts.

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby accused Lula of “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda.”

Lula, who has pitched himself as a broker for peace talks to end the conflict, said over the weekend that “the United States needs to stop encouraging war and start talking about peace.

His comments came after meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping. China published a peace plan in February that does not explicitly call for Russia to leave Ukraine.

Russia waged a full invasion of Ukraine in February last year. The International Criminal Court has since issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mr Lavrov, who visited Brasilia on Monday, said that Moscow was “grateful to our Brazilian friends for their clear understanding of the genesis of the situation.”

We are grateful for their desire to contribute to finding ways to settle this situation,” he said.

Mr Kirby said Lula’s comments were “simply misguided” and missed the mark by “suggesting the United States and Europe are somehow not interested in peace, or that we share responsibility for the war.”

In response, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said of Mr Kirby: “I don’t know how or why he reached that conclusion, but I do not agree at all.”

Brazil has not joined Western countries in imposing sanctions on Russia and has refused requests to supply ammunition to Ukraine.

While Brazil is calling for peace talks, Ukraine and its allies say an immediate ceasefire would allow Russia to keep hold of territory it illegally obtained through force.

Kenyan Await Malaria Vaccine Amid Slow Rollout

0

In Kenya’s western city of Kisumu, Malaria is endemic and Parents queue to have their children jabbed.

They will receive the RTS, S vaccine which acts against Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest malaria parasite globally and the most prevalent in Africa.

That vaccine, sold by GlaxoSmithKline as Mosquirix, is about 30% effective. Despite medical trials for other parasitic and mosquito-borne diseases, progress is painstaking but hope is on the horizon. R21 vaccine, whose preliminary results from early testing have suggested that it is far more effective than the RTS, S malaria vaccine the only one currently authorised for use by the WHO.

It’s very important for the research specialists to try to invest resources and time to come up with a one-time vaccine that will help to manage this disease once and for all for mothers so that we reduce the cases of infant fatalities,” Sarafina Okoth, a mother of 6-month-old says.

According to CDC estimates, more than 3.5 million people in Kenya get malaria every year. Over 10,000 die from it. Last month Kenya said it will expand the use of RTS,S (a four-dose malaria vaccine), in an additional 25 sub-counties within the eight lake-endemic counties.

Hope in the horizon

Since September 2019, Kenya’s National Vaccines, and Immunization Programme (NVIP) working collaboratively with the Division of National Malaria Program (DNMP) has provided the malaria vaccine as part of routine immunization in 26 sub-counties across eight counties (Homabay, Kisumu, Migori, Siaya, Busia, Bungoma, Vihiga, and Kakamega) in Western Kenya.

Still at the “Pediatric Ward 2″, many patients here are losing patience because of the slow of vaccine rollout.

Lydia Kemunto is caring for her 6-year-old daughter Moraa: “This is not the first time she has been sick with malaria. She has been ailing from malaria and gets treated, but this time, it is much more serious. I would like to make an appeal, if there is a drug that can stop this, let it come. If there is a treatment available to help us because the cost of living has gone up so high.”

“I have already spent a lot (to treat my child). Sometimes I wonder if I should take care of the child’s medical treatments or buy them food to eat.”

According to the WHO, there were 247 million cases of malaria in 2021, and 619,000 people died from it.

The vast majority of malaria cases are in Africa, 96% of all the deaths in this region are among children under the age of five.

Preliminary results from early testing have suggested that the R21 vaccine developed by the Jenner Institute at the University of Oxford is far more effective than the RTS, S malaria vaccine.

Late-stage testing of the R21 vaccine is still underway in Burkina Faso, Kenya, Mali, and Tanzania, with results expected later this year.

Results from an earlier trial released last year showed that in children vaccinated in Burkina Faso, the R21 vaccine was up to 80% effective depending on how much of an immune-boosting ingredient was included in the shots.

Ghana became the first country to approve its rollout on 13 April.

G7 Ministers Pledge To Intensify Russia Sanctions

The foreign ministers of G7 have pledged to intensify sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine and criticised China for its actions in the Taiwan Strait and disputed South China Sea, urging Beijing “to act as a responsible member of the international community.”

The comments issued on Tuesday marked the conclusion of a three-day meeting in the Japanese resort town of Karuizawa.

The G7 communique also criticised North Korea over its nuclear and ballistic missile programme, expressed concern over the violence in Sudan and Myanmar and called on the Taliban to reverse its ban on women working for non-governmental organisations, NGOs, and the United Nations.”

The document was prepared as a template for global leaders to use at a G7 summit that will be held in Hiroshima, Japan next month, and also included language about Iran, nuclear proliferation and other “grave threats.”

Two crises stood out: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and China’s increasing assertiveness against and military manoeuvres around Taiwan, the self-governing democracy that Beijing claims as its own.

But it was ”Russia’s invasion of Ukraine’‘ that was the ‘focus’ of the summit.

The group, which comprises the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Canada, said, “There can be no impunity for war crimes and other atrocities such as Russia’s attacks against civilians and critical civilian infrastructure.

We remain committed to intensifying sanctions against Russia, coordinating and fully enforcing them,” the ministers said and would support “for as long as it takes” Ukraine as it defends itself.

Russia’s current offensive is largely stalled, and Ukraine is preparing a counteroffensive, but there is widespread global worry about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s repeated threats to use tactical nuclear weapons.

Russia’s irresponsible nuclear rhetoric and its threat to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus are unacceptable,” the ministers said.

They added that any use of chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons in Ukraine would be met with “severe consequences.”

Nigeria Has The Capacity To Export Medical Practitioners

0

Nigeria has the capacity to export medical officers to needy nations if available potentials are adequately harnessed and planned.

Delta stated Governor, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa said this while inaugurating the Collegiate System in the State’s Schools of Nursing at the College of Nursing, Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of the state.

He said that rather than restricting medical practitioners from moving out of the country, more of them could be trained, and from the pool, enough would remain in the country while some could be exported to needy nations.

“Nigeria can leverage the massive demand for medical professionals trained in the country by signing bilateral agreements with foreign nations to train and export more of the professionals to those countries,” he said.

He frowned at the prevailing development where medical professionals no longer empathised with humanity, saying that it had become commonplace and unethical.

Okowa urged all medical workers to adhere to the ethics of their professions by ensuring that they put in their best to render assistance to patients by showing them love at all times.

He said that Nigeria had the challenge of nurses, midwives and doctors exiting the country, and pointed out that the situation had begun to trouble the healthcare system in the country.

I think as a nation if we know where our strength lies, we can do things that can enable us to improve on where our strength lies.

“There is nothing wrong if there is a planned programme by Nigeria to train many more nurses than we need, and we enter into a bilateral relationship with other countries to export some of our nurses, midwives and doctors.

“I am not one of those that will come out to say that we are trying to make laws to stop or restrict the movement of medical personnel out of the country.

“What we need to do is to ensure that there is a planned programme by Nigeria to truly train more than our daily and yearly need and ensure that we are able to enter into strategic alliances with other countries,” he said.

He commended the Ministry of Health and the management of Schools of Nursing in the state for their efforts at upgrading the institutions to the collegiate system.

He said that such a system could enhance the training of more nurses and other medical workers.

I believe that the college system that is starting in Delta will encourage this and I hope that we have people who are able to encourage and support you to do this.

“I believe that we have the capacity to train a lot more nurses than we need at the moment; it just requires a little more resource and focus,” he said.

Okowa also appreciated the Central Bank of Nigeria for supporting the state government to upscale some facilities in the college in Agbor.

I also want to thank the Registrar of Nursing and Midwifery Council for promising to see how they can further upscale the number of students in the school.

“I can see that the students are very excited because beyond becoming nurses and midwives, they now have the opportunity of having a Higher National Diploma (HND) in nursing services,” he said.

In his remarks, the Secretary-General and Registrar, of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Alhaji Farouk Umar Abubakar, commended Okowa for his great commitment to the development of the state, including health and other sectors.

He said that Okowa had written his name in gold for his positive contributions to nursing and other health professions in the country.

Abubakar said that Nigerian nurses and midwives were performing well globally, and that the country had produced no fewer than 21,000 nurses in the past six years.

He said that domestication of the community-nursing programme in most states in the country had contributed immensely to producing adequate nursing and midwifery grassroots manpower for primary healthcare services.

Earlier, Commissioner for Health, Dr Mordi Ononye, said that the transition from School to College System wouldn’t have been possible without the unalloyed support of Gov. Okowa to the ministry.

He said that the Colleges of Nursing in Agbor was indexed from 30 to 100 students; 50 to 75 for Warri and 50 to 70 for Eku, while the two schools of midwifery in Asaba and Sapele were indexed at 50.

US: Man Charged For Shooting A Teenager

0

A man in the US state of Missouri has been charged with shooting a teenager who rang the wrong doorbell while picking up his younger brothers.

Suspect Andrew Lester, 84

Andrew Lester, 84, has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action, prosecutors said.

Mr Lester, who is white, allegedly shot Ralph Yarl, 16, who is black, once in the head and once in the arm last Thursday night. The boy survived.

A prosecutor said there was a “racial component” to the shooting.

Mr Lester has not been charged with a hate crime, and charging documents do not describe the alleged racial bias.

At a press conference on Monday, Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson said:

That doesn’t matter where you come from, what you look like or how much money you have.

Police initially detained Mr Lester for questioning and let him go, sparking protests throughout the city on Sunday.

On Monday, protesters gathered outside the suspect’s home chanting “black lives are under attack” and “stand up, fight back“, online video shows. Mr Lester’s home has also reportedly been vandalised.

Personal injury lawyer Benjamin Crump, who is representing the Yarl family, said: “You can’t just shoot people without having justification when somebody comes knocking on your door – and knocking on your door is not justification.”

Ralph’s family said the teen had been trying to pick up his younger twin brothers from a friend’s house at around 22:00 local time on 13 April when he knocked on Mr Lester’s door.

Family members say the boy mistakenly went to 115th Street instead of 115th Terrace and rang the bell twice. After being shot, he went to three nearby homes before someone helped him, they said.

No words were exchanged before the homeowner opened fire with a .32 revolver, prosecutors said.

But another attorney for the family, Lee Merritt, told NBC News: “He heard rustling around going on in the house and then finally the door was open.”

And he was confronted by a man who told him, ‘Don’t come back around here,’ and then he immediately fired his weapon.

According to local reports, Mr Lester told police that he believed someone was breaking into his home and fired two shots through his door. A witness also told the local news station that he heard Ralph “screaming that he had been shot.

On Monday, prosecutors said Missouri citizens have the right to use force if they “reasonably” fear that they are in danger. They declined to elaborate further on the specifics of this case.

Ralph was released from hospital on Sunday and was at home recovering from his injuries, family members said.

The boy’s father, Paul Yarl, told the Kansas City Star the charges were “such a relief.

I’m happy. This is what we’ve been looking for. It’s here.”

According to the family’s lawyers, President Joe Biden called the Yarls on Monday and spoke with them for 20 minutes.

He told reporters that Mr Biden had offered his prayers and invited them to the White House once the teenager has recovered.

Russia Steps Up Heavy Artillery Bombardments On Bakhmut

0

Russian President Vladimir Putin has met his commanders in two regions of Ukraine that Moscow claims to have annexed, while Russian forces stepped up heavy artillery bombardments and air strikes on the devastated eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.

The Kremlin said “Putin had attended a military command meeting in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region and visited a national guard headquarters in eastern Luhansk.” It did not say when the visits took place.

Putin heard reports from commanders of the airborne forces and the Dnieper army group as well as other senior officers who briefed him on the situation in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in the south.

“It is important for me to hear your opinion on how the situation is developing, to listen to you, to exchange information,” Putin, 70, told the commanders.

Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Donetsk are the four regions that Putin proclaimed annexed last September following what Kyiv and its Western allies said were sham referendums. Russian forces only partly control the four regions.

Russian troops retreated from Kherson city, the regional capital, last November, and have been “reinforcing their positions” on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River in anticipation of a Ukrainian counter offensive.

While numerous Western leaders have made their way to Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy since Russian forces invaded 14 months ago, Putin has rarely visited parts of Ukraine under Russian control.

Last month, he visited Crimea – annexed by Russia in 2014 – and the southeastern city of Mariupol in Donetsk region.

A Russian winter offensive failed to make much progress and its troops have been bogged down in a series of battles in the east and south, where advances have been incremental and come at a huge cost to both sides.

Israeli Ambassador Calls for Religious Tolerance in Nigeria

The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has asked for greater unity among the Abrahamic faiths, saying that they all belong to the same source.

Ambassador Freeman made the call during an iftar dinner hosted for Muslims by the Jewish community in Nigeria, to which Christians were also invited.

He said: What unites us is so much more than anything that divides us and the differences that we have, are so minor in comparison to the fact that we are Abraham’s children.

“We all come to stem from Abraham, we all come from the same place and we all are going to end up in the same place ultimately, and so to be able to seal this is something special, he adds.

“Today is that opportunity for us to say, never again, not only say never again but to demonstrate it under this roof. Christians, Muslims Jews, celebrating what unites us celebrating the festivals, we have just finished Easter, we’ve just been in Passover and we’re about to finish Ramadan.”

Speaking at the Iftar on Monday night in Abuja, the Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community in Nigeria, Rabbi Israel Uzan, said Nigerians are completely living together and that he saw the mixing of different religions and different people living together as a distinguished reality in the country.

A Jew, Christian and Muslim

“In Nigeria, for the last 10 years that am here, maybe am too naïve or I have to change my glasses, I don’t see so many problems that we talk always about in the newspaper. Yes, there are many problems but there are so many good aspects of Nigeria.

“Nigerians are coexisting, celebrating all the holidays together. We have Jews country, Muslims, and Christians country, and all of them thank God. Nigerians are a country they are always together because you cannot identify it as Christian, Muslim or Jews country. Nigeria is a beautiful mixed country, mixing family, politics, and business and tonight this is what we can see,” Uzan said.

Also, one of the Chief Imams of Abuja, Dr Muhammad Kabir Adam asked the three religions to  reaffirm our commitment to peacebuilding, our commitment to peaceful coexistence, our commitment to always receive each other, live with each other and everybody is free to his own belief.”

He added that having the three religions celebrating at the same time was a very rare and historic event. “Ithe last few days, we celebrated the Passover, we had the Easter celebrations and now Muslims are preparing for Eid- El Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. The three things used to happen only three times in 100 years, So this year is very historic.

Still speaking on tolerance, Imam Muhammed quoting the Qur’an said: There is no compulsion in religion, so you can practice your religion, I can practice my religion, or we can talk to people, sell to them the ideas of our religion, and whoever is interested, he is free to take it or leave it but the most important is for us to always live in peace and understand each other.

The Chairman Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN), FCT Chapter, Rev. Timothy Amakon said: “Religion should not be something that will divide human beings or something that will make human beings see one another as enemies. But I believe that religion is what God made to unite us.”

Amakon said all human beings worldwide should understand that mankind is one and serving the same God.

Speaking on the essence of the gathering, Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyah Mosque, Sheik Fuad Adeyemi, said that the event showed that everyone can practice their beliefs in peace and thus an indication that mankind can live in peace without trampling on other people’s rights.

He said: What some people are saying is let all religions should be one it cannot be possible. We couldn’t have one religion, but whatever the number of religious groups that we belong to, we should not see it as a weapon that we use to fight ourselves that is the only thing we are saying in the Abrahamic mission.

“The essence of what we are doing here today is also to confirm or to cement that unity. Yes, we are different. Yes, we could do things together. Yes, our difference does not mean we are enemies to ourselves and that is why this program is also trying to promote peace and unity.”

The programme by the Jewish community in Abuja was attended by representatives of the US,  French, Moroccan and UAE embassies.

Anambra Ministry Of Environment To Celebrate World Earth Day

The cherished drive for a Clean, Green and Sustainable Anambra, initiated by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, (CFR), goes into higher gear as the Anambra State Ministry of Environment celebrates World Earth Day on Saturday, April 22.

The special event of the day is a Town Hall Meeting organized by the Ministry of Environment on the theme; Clean, Green and Sustainable Anambra. Taking Ownership: A Community Participation Approach.

The Town Hall Meeting which is billed to start at 10am prompt at Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka will comprehensively place the community at the very heart of the sustenance of the Clean and Green revolution in Anambra State.

It needs to be recalled that on Friday, March 31, 2023 Anambra State Governor Prof. Soludo led the charge of Ndi-Anambra to Ochanja Market in Onitsha to undertake the watershed flag-off of the Clean, Green and Sustainable programme.

Governor Soludo in championing the cause of a sustainable clean and green Anambra State is of course following the script of his well-articulated People’s Manifesto aimed at turning the homeland into a liveable, pleasurable and prosperous destination of choice.

In his avowed manner of leading by example, Governor Soludo personally set the tone by physically engaging in desilting and evacuation.

After the Friday, March 31st flag-off by Governor Soludo in Ochanja Market, the launching of the Sustainable Clean and Green Anambra State programme was extended to the 21 local governments and 181 communities on Saturday, April 1st with the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim taking up the charge.

In addition to the actions initiated few weeks ago, the Saturday, April 22 Town Hall Meeting at Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre is coming as the next logical step that could help to ensure the sustainability of the Clean and Green culture in Anambra State.

Governor Soludo who is the Distinguished Guest of Honour at the World Earth Day occasion is expected to deliver new vistas on the Clean, Green and Sustainable vision and mission of Anambra State after his landmark launch of desilting drainages. The following distinguished panelists will be on hand to discuss the theme of the Town Hall Meeting. They include: Mr Ibrahim Odumboni . Managing Director /CEO Lagos State Waste Management Authority LAWMA; Professor Leo Muoghalu, Dean faculty of Environmental Sciences, Chukwuemeka Ojukwu University and Professor Peter C. Nnabude, an expert on Soil Science and Water Conservation, Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

To sustain the Clean and Green campaign, it is incumbent on the public and the communities to take ownership of their environment.

Major stakeholders such as traditional rulers, market leaders, church prelates, educational institution heads, motor park unions, landlord associations etc. must continually be involved in the Clean and Green task.

It must become a way of life, a culture, and a tradition that marks Anambra State out as indeed the Light of the Nation. That’s the only way Ndi-Anambra can help create a liveable, pleasurable and prosperous state as passionately espoused by Mr. Governor.
Filth and dirt are anathema and incompatible with the kind of progressive state Governor Soludo envisions.

The native Anambra society is known for cleanliness from the beginning of time. That’s who we are and this government intends to keep it so. A clean, green and sustainable Anambra is an idea whose time has come in keeping with the ideals of Ndi-Anambra (Anambra people).

Tree felling

In shaping up the environment for good, there should be a total stop to the indiscriminate felling of trees by the people. The consequences of the felling of trees are dire, especially as it leads to rampant erosion all over the state.
Even where its absolutely necessary to cut down a tree, the person must plant three trees for every one tree brought down.

It is worth restating that Anambra and Lagos are the two states with the least land mass, but while Lagos can gain more land through ocean reclamation, Anambra keeps losing its land through the scourge of erosion.

All these are issues to be tackled on the World Earth Day Town Hall Meeting holding at Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka on Saturday, April 22.
