UK bans TikTok on government phones over security concerns

0

Britain says it would ban TikTok on government phones with immediate effect.

The move follows other Western countries in barring the Chinese-owned video app over security concerns.

“The security of sensitive government information must come first, so today we are banning this app on government devices. The use of other data-extracting apps will be kept under review,” Cabinet Office minister Oliver Dowden said in a statement.

“Restricting the use of TikTok on government devices is a prudent and proportionate step following advice from our cyber security experts,” Dowden said.

He told parliament that government devices would now only be able to access third-party apps from a pre-approved list. The TikTok ban does not include personal devices of government employees or ministers and there would be limited exemptions where TikTok was required on government devices for work purposes, Dowden added.

TikTok has come under increasing scrutiny due to fears that user data from the app owned by Beijing-based company ByteDance could end up in the hands of the Chinese government, undermining Western security interests.

The British government had asked the National Cyber Security Centre to look at the potential vulnerability of government data from social media apps and the risks around how sensitive information could be accessed and used.

The United States, Canada, Belgium and the European Commission have already banned the app from official devices.

TikTok said it was disappointed with the decision and had already begun taking steps to further protect European user data.

“We believe these bans have been based on fundamental misconceptions and driven by wider geopolitics, in which TikTok, and our millions of users in the UK, play no part,” a TikTok spokesperson said.

China said the decision was based on political considerations rather than facts.

The move “interferes with the normal operations of relevant companies in the UK and will ultimately only harm the UK’s own interests”, its embassy in London said in a statement. British government departments and ministers have been increasingly using TikTok and other platforms to communicate with voters.

Energy Minster Grant Shapps said the ban on government devices was sensible, but he would stay on the platform on his personal phone.

Britain’s Ministry of Defence posted a video on the platform shortly before the ban was announced showing how the British army was training Ukrainian forces to use the Challenger 2 battle tank.

Nigerian Government commences activities to mark World TB Day

0

In commemoration of this year’s World Tuberculosis Day (WTD) in Nigeria, activities are in top gear as the Nigerian government and its partners renewed their commitment to the global fight against Tuberculosis, a disease that has affected millions of people worldwide.

The Executive Director, KNCV TB Foundation Nigeria and chairman 2023 World TB Day Planning Committee, Dr Berthrand Odume made this known during the 2023 Pre-World TB Day Press Conference organised by Stop TB Partnership Nigeria, in collaboration with National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLCP) Federal Ministry of Health in Abuja the nation’s capital.

Dr Odume said despite the progress made tuberculosis remains a significant global health challenge and it is the world’s deadliest infectious disease and must be tackled with utmost urgency and responsibility.

“This, we can achieve through government, communities and stakeholders buy-in. we need more education on TB, more importantly the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Working with the media, the program can make progress in educating the public on the impact of this deadly disease as well as current efforts by the governments, the key funders of TB program in Nigeria, the United States Agency for International Development, (USAID), Global Fund, GF) and other partners in addressing the scourge of the disease in Nigeria”. He said.

The Executive Director, KNCV TB Foundation Nigeria and chairman 2023 World TB Day Planning Committee explained that in this year’s World TB day celebration, they will continue to reach out to government and private sector to galvanise effort at increasing domestic resources for the control of TB in Nigeria.

Odume said the planning committee of this years World TB day has scheduled several activities to look forward to in commemorating the World TB Day in Abuja.

“The activities includes training of teachers, roadshow, outreach to 6 area councils, press briefing on the 24th of March at the ministry of health which similar activities will also be supported across the 36 states in the country”. He added.

The planned activities is to help raise more awareness about the impact of Tuberculosis in the country and to encourage early diagnosis and treatment.

Speaking at the Pre-World TB Day press conference, the Acting Board Chairman, Stop TB Partnership Nigeria, Dr Queen Ogbuji-Ladipo said Nigeria has made very significant progress in the last few years to increase TB case notification, but still have some gaps.

“Presently as at the end of 2022, the program was able to achieve 60% performance of its estimates for TB case notification that shows that the country is making good progress, but we still have a large gap so close, so as Stop TB Partnership, we call on all to continue to consolidate our efforts until we achieve Nigeria free of TB. The media, we urge you to please to continue to increase awareness about TB through your various channels. The community based organizations should continue to work within our communities to identify TB cases and to carry out your preventive activities”. She said.

“We are very appreciative of our donors, the USAID and the Global Fund for release of fertility program in Nigeria and we are very optimistic of their continuous support to us”. She added.

The National Coordinator, National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLCP) Federal Ministry of Health in Nigeria, Dr Chukwuma Anyaike explained that Tuberculosis is still a very big issue globally, and Nigeria is one of the countries with the highest burden of Tuberculosis.

Dr Anyaike said that Nigeria is number one in Africa and still the sixth globally. He stressed that Tuberculosis is not caused by any witchcraft but an infectious disease caused by a bacterium called mycobacterium tuberculosis and can not be contracted by shaking of hands, and by hugging. “The bacterium is suspended in the air and you can breath it in. Whatever happens afterwards, depends on your body immune system”.

“We need to make much awareness creation and I’m challenging our colleagues from the media angle to help us, you have done so well, at least before it was 25% of Nigerians not knowing much about tuberculosis and the burden in Nigeria but we still have a lot of problems. So as the number one principle of primary prevention, awareness creation comes in, we need to make much noise and it shouldn’t be just on an annual basis. We should try as much as possible to let people know, people hear of TB, I want us to expand it to tuberculosis”. He said.

Dr Anyaike said in the midst of the struggles, Nigeria has repeatedly done well. “If you look at where we started by the end of 2022, we were able to notify above 285,000 missing cases in Nigeria and that is 60% of the missing cases is a huge milestone, but we have not gotten there, so we were able to do that by the sheer cooperation and commitment, with passion of every person. I remember by this time last year we were also here. So by that time last year it was not 60 So we should also celebrate ourselves haven’t gone this far”. He added.

The WHO country representative in Nigeria, Dr Walter Kazadi Mulombo, who was represented by Dr Oyama Ogbuagu said too many people are pushed into poverty when they contract TB due to loss of income, transport costs and other expenses. He noted that 71% of the TB patients in Nigeria and their household are affected by the catastrophic cost due to TB.

He said WHO in collaboration with other partners have supported the country to conduct an epidemiological analysis of the national TB program and the midterm review of the national TB strategic plan the 2021 to 2025 which has the overall aim among others to provide the necessary guidelines for the development of the new global fund drafts for 2024 to 2026.

“Currently, that process is going on and hopefully that application which will bring additional resources to the country, for the TB epidemic response efforts will be submitted by the 28th March of this year, WHO will continue to support Nigeria to developed and implementing guidelines, plans, framework and strategic documents to end TB epidemic in Nigeria”. He added.

The theme for this year’s World TB Day is Yes! We Can End TB” and the slogan is  Get involved!

Poland to send fighter jets to Ukraine

0

President Andrzej Duda says Poland will send four Soviet-era Mig fighter jets to Ukraine in the coming days, with others handed over in the future.

The move will make Poland the first NATO country to send planes since Russia invaded last year.

Though a welcome boost to Ukraine’s air defence, the extra jets are not expected to be decisive in the war.

The deputy speaker of Ukraine’s parliament Olena Kondratyuk said she hoped more countries would follow.

Other NATO countries are considering sending the Soviet-era planes, which Ukrainian pilots are trained to fly.

President Duda said Poland still had around a dozen Soviet-era Mig 29 aircraft in operation. Ukraine has previously asked Western countries for modern fighter jets, such as the F-16.

The UK is training Ukrainian pilots on Nato-standard aircraft. But because of the long training times, it has warned that supplying Western jets would only ever be a long-term option.

President Biden has previously ruled out sending jets from the US to Ukraine.

At the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine was believed to have around 120 combat-capable aircraft – mainly ageing Mig-29s and Su-27s.

Ukrainian MP Kira Rudik said the fighter jets will strengthen Ukraine’s air defence systems and help its army in the spring counter-offensive.

“It’s also a good sign to everybody that getting fighter jets to Ukraine is not something unspeakable or surreal – that this is something that can happen; that the only thing that is needed to make it happen is political will.” Rudik said

Yuriy Sak, an adviser to the Ukrainian defence minister, told the BBC the Polish jets would be used “very efficiently by our air force”.

He said in the past 24 hours, the existing Ukrainian air force had carried out 16 air strikes on Russian personnel and equipment. But he stressed that Ukraine wanted “fourth generation” jets, such as F-16s.

“They are more universal platforms, they are more capable and of course they will make Ukrainian air forces more efficient,” he said.

Poland is a strong ally of Ukraine one of the largest suppliers of military equipment. It is currently replacing its old Soviet-era planes with newer American and Korean models.

Pension reforms: Police, protesters clash in France

0

French police have clashed with protesters in Paris after the government forced through pension reforms without a vote in parliament.

Crowds converged on Place de la Concorde in response to raising the retirement age from 62 to 64.

A fire was lit in the middle of the Place de la Concorde and police with shields and batons fired tear gas and moved to clear the square.

By nightfall, 120 people had been arrested, Paris police told AFP news agency.

The plans had sparked two months of heated political debate and strikes.

Finally, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne invoked article 49:3 of the constitution – allowing the government to avoid a vote in the Assembly.

The decision was taken minutes before MPs were scheduled to vote on the controversial bill, because there was no guarantee of winning a majority.

The move caused fury among opposition politicians. Many jeered the prime minister, sang La Marseillaise and held up signs of protest in parliament.

No-confidence motion

Far-right opposition leader, Marine Le Pen has suggested that a no-confidence motion will be filed against President Emmanuel Macron’s government.

Leader of the left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI), Mathilde Panot, tweeted that Mr Macron had plunged the country into a government crisis, without parliamentary or popular legitimacy.

Thousands of people came out on the streets of Paris and other French cities to reject the move, singing the national anthem and waving trade union flags.

Unions have vowed to maintain their opposition to the pension changes, with the Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT) saying another day of strikes and demonstrations was being planned for Thursday 23 March.

Morale in France is low and getting lower, and people see retirement as a bright spot in the future. But many feel this is a rich man’s government taking even that away.

Institute caution farmers from early planting with first rainfall

The Executive Director, National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), Badeggi, Niger State, Dr. Aliyu Umar has warned farmers to hesitate from rushing into planting with the first rainfall.

Umar, who issued the warning during an interview with journalists in his office, in Baddegi, said the alert became necessary as crops planted with the first rain might become roasted as a result of heat, if the rain stops.

He explained that to prevent losses, farmers should exercise some patience for another rain before planting their crops.

While describing the early rains across the country as good, he cautioned farmers not to rush into planting, saying, If any farmer wants to use this first rain to plant, such farmer should ensure the storage of enough water to wet their crops if the rain did not continue . It is not advisable to plant with the first rain, but farmers should prepare their farms ahead. First rain means it is time for crop farmers to start clearing their farms, not to plant crops.”

“It does not mean they should commence planting immediately, it only means that they should prepare the ground and start planning ahead of the full rainy season,” he added.

Umar also enjoined farmers to embrace mixed cropping due to its advantages. “I want to advise farmers to plant mixture of crops so that in the event of anything, the loss will be minimal,” he added.

He however, urged farmers to purchase farming inputs from reputable sources to avoid wasting their money on adulterated inputs, which have been on the increase in markets.

The executive director assured that the NCRI would continue to provide quality seeds to boost agricultural production and food security in the country.

Group to Commence Export of High-yielding wheat Seed

The African Agricultural Transformation Organization has announced that preparations are underway toward producing and exporting high yielding, heat-resistant wheat.

Dr. Oluwatoyin Adetunji, the Value Chain Specialist at TAAT Clearinghouse, revealed this at the beginning of a two-day wheat training workshop.

He said the workshop’s goal is to identify obstacles limiting the Nigerian wheat seed industry and offer solutions for overcoming them.

Adetunji bemoaned the fact that, up until this point, Nigeria has imported at least 95% of its wheat, a situation that has been and continues to drain our foreign exchange.

He added that, in the not-too-distant future, following the intensification of research programs on wheat, Nigeria will start exporting high-quality wheat to other countries.

In order to make Nigeria self-sufficient in wheat production and compete with Ethiopia and Sudan, which are both self-sufficient in wheat production, she listed the challenges currently facing TAAT, including those related to technology and financing.

In addition to identifying the causes and effects of seed mixtures, Adetunji says the workshop also aims to identify the gaps in the seed development process.

“Wheat is very important and the most commonly consumed food globally, as it is used for the production of bread, macaroni, spaghetti, masa, cuscus, and what have you. Following our commitment and determination, we have, through intensive research programmes developed heat-tolerant materials that can survive in Nigeria,” she said.

Further, she explained that stakeholders will interact during the workshop to identify specific problems relevant to their organizations, and that technical knowledge will be shared on how to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the seed sector.

Dramatic footage on social media shows a large blaze, with smoke visible all over the city.

Rostov’s regional governor said a short circuit appeared to have caused the fire, which ignited fuel tanks.

The street where the building is located has been cordoned off.

“The blaze occurred at a building belonging to the FSB’s regional border patrol section in a built-up area of the city.”

The FSB is Russia’s internal security service and is responsible for counter-intelligence, border security and counter-terrorism.

Rostov Governor Vassily Golubev said “the fire had spread over 800 sq m, causing two walls to collapse.

In a statement, the FSB’s public relations office said “the blaze started at around 12:30 local time (09:30 GMT). It also confirmed there had been fatalities, but offered no further details.

Authorities managed put out the blaze by 16:00 local time, 13:00 GMT, Russian media reported.

The city is the capital of the southern Rostov region bordering on the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, currently the scene of intense fighting in the war.

There have been a spate of arson attacks on government buildings in Russia, such as enlistment and conscription offices, since the February 2022w invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine denied involvement in the fire.

Presidential aide Mykhaylo Podolyak said on Twitter that the incident was a “manifestation of panic” in Russia. “Ukraine doesn’t interfere, but watches with pleasure,” he said.”

Nigeria’s President-Elect Plans Government Of National Competence

Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Tinubu says his focus is to form a government of national competence, rather than that of national unity to address the nation’s challenges.

President-elect Tinubu said this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said; “As your incoming president, I accept the task before me… There has been talk of a government of national unity, my aim is higher than that. I seek a government of national competence.

“We have walked through the thick of the night to emerge into the light of brighter days to come.”

President-elect Tinubu further said that there was no good reason to retreat into the darkness of years past.

He said; “There is time to complete the task, but time is also of the essence, we must not tarry or fret over the enormity of what we face. We are able of mind and body.

“Now, we must show the spirit and willpower to accomplish the historic things that lie within our grasp.

“In selecting my government, I shall not be weighed down by considerations extraneous to ability and performance. The day for political gamesmanship is long gone. I shall assemble competent men and women and young people from across Nigeria to build a safer, more prosperous and just Nigeria.”

The incoming President promised that there would be young people in his cabinet, stressing that women would also be prominent as character and competence would be the determining factor not religion.

Top priorities

To secure the country and make it prosperous must be our top priorities, we could not sacrifice these goals to political expediencies,” he said.

The former two-term governor of Lagos State explained that the whims of politics must take a back seat to the imperatives of governance.

He said; “We have bridges and roads to build not just for commerce and travels, but to connect people of different faiths, parties and different outlooks in harmonious dialogue and common purpose.

“We have families to feed not just to eliminate hunger, but to nurture enlightenment, civic responsibility and compassion.

“We have jobs to create not merely to put people to work, but to afford all a better standard of living by which families and communities are improved and democracy deepened.

“We have water to replenish not just to quench physical thirst, but to ignite a thirst for creative and better solutions to society’s challenges.”

The President-elect said; “We also have a nation to protect to eliminate danger and even the fear of danger.”

He prayed that under his leadership, Nigerians would be able to live their lives in the light of peace and the glow of broadening prosperity.

According to him, an important step toward restoring economic normalcy had been taken by the Supreme Court’s decision on the parity of old and new naira notes.

This, he said, had restored both the rule of law and economic decency, but not the end of the story.

It is merely the beginning of a more comprehensive solution to our economic challenges. Our Renewed Hope Action Plan outlines goals for greater economic growth in our cities and rural communities.

“We are committed to an economy of double-digit Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, greater food security and one with a strengthened manufacturing base.

“We are also committed to an active digital economy where young people will have ample space to fulfill their dreams and aspirations.

“I realise that I am the servant of a larger purpose, as such, I have gone straight to work,” the President-elect explained.

He further said that his team had been engaged in discussions and meetings, refining ideas and policy solutions so that it could begin actively working toward the common good immediately he assumed office.

The Nigerian project beckons to us all to work together as Nigerians for Nigeria, those who voted for us should continue to believe in our policies and plans for the country.

“I also ask that you reach out to your brothers and sisters who did not vote as you did, extend to them the hand of friendship, reconciliation and togetherness…To those of you who did not vote for me, I ask you to believe in Nigeria and in the capacity of your fellow citizens, even those who voted differently than you.

“The better Nigeria I seek is not just for me and my supporters. It is equally yours. I do not ask you to abandon your political preferences, that would be undemocratic. I do beseech you to answer the call of patriotic duty as the loyal opposition,” the President-elect said.

He stated that his team had been engaged in discussions and meetings, refining ideas and policy solutions so that it could begin actively working toward the common good immediately he assumed office.

He stated that “If we all play our proper roles, we would begin the task of rebuilding our national home together, day by day, brick by brick, notwithstanding our political differences, as such, the victory of national progress would belong to all of us.

“This is our country, this is our moment, we dare not waste it, nor do we back away to accept a lesser version of ourselves and of our collective fate.

“We can no longer be satisfied with calling ourselves the giant of Africa, we must devote ourselves to doing those great and historic things only a giant can do.”

“As your president-elect, I shall do my utmost in this regard for this is my sworn duty. I call upon you to come bravely forth as well.

“Not for me, but out of abiding love of country and for the people who inhabit it with you,” he added.
